ITALIAN CLIFF DWELLERS OF TODAY NOT PRIMITIVE THOUGH WARLIKE
THIS IS THE APPEAL OP A BRITISH TOMMY AT THE FRONT GREAT BRITAIN AND FRANCE WEARY. BUT UNUALM i'KD, DECLARES MAJOR GENERAL LEONARD WOOD EVERY BRITISHER AND CANADIAN NEEDED.
Wera in a war which is going to tax us to the utmost," declares Major General Leonard Wood of the United States Army. "We are going into the valley of the shadow. We're going to win, but not easily, not without paying the price that all Bust pay for waiting too long. Everything we have must be engaged. Men, women, children must Jend their activities. "France and Great Britain are glorious but they are tired. They
are weary, but speaking literally, on a long tour through the trenches I have yet to hear one man talk of quitting. "Their determination should be an inspiration to us. What they need Is the vigor of our support. We must adopt the motto of the Black Prince 'I serve'. "If the United States officer makes such an appeal, what wonder that British and Canadian officers are working days, nights and Sundays to secure British and Canadian volunteers in the United States to help their brothers hold the line and win the war?" said one of them today. MWe need every man we can get. British and Canadian soldiers, battling bravely and unflinchingly against the hordes of Huns on the Western front are writing to the folk at home and to their kinsmen in the United States pleading with
them to do their bit. One of the best, straight from a soldier's heart is the folowing: "Cannot you stand by us to the end? Have your very sons, brothers and pals died in vain? For God's sake, give us your full, mighty support! You do not see, as we are seeing, old man, women and children trekking away from their homes, stumbling under heavy burdens, crying quietly as they go. You did not see a girl lying at a roadside yesterday with a bullet through her head. You did not know that Boche machine guns slew civilians across that very road. It is, therefore, difficult for you to realize it at all. But will you have it said for the rest of your lives and through all history to come that the Boche won because the British race refused to the army all the men that were required."
UNIQUE MORTAR IS PERFECTED WHICH HURLS BOMB WITH BARBED WIRE TAIL
faring barbed wire entanglements by mortar. The latest tale of war machinery' s advancement is the tale of the wire-tailed bomb thrower. It is a unique mortar which has just been perfected and which hurls five rolls of barbed wire 200 feet in the air. When the end of the wire falls in an enemy trench its weighted end, which is a bomb, explodes. The barbed wire unwinds and twists in every direction and plays hob with any moving troops in its path.

"Dug-outs" of Italian troops on
mountain sides. , The Italian troopers fighting the Austro-Gennans high on the sides of mountains have "dug-outs" that are not at all like the "dug-outs" of the ally fighters on the western front. Their shelters re perched on the side of cliffs out of sight and range of the enemy guns and though they are hastily .constructed they are serviceable and comfortable. .

ELSIE FERGUSON, STAR IN ARTCRAFT PICTURES
The most astounding example of unexpected development in the motion picture firmament is Elsie Ferguson. That in itself cameos her against the background of other unufual performances in this field. By no means has he been alone in her climb to startm, boh ori the stage find on the veen. She, however, gave less evince of any intention. She just struck
out and landed head, shoulders and feeV above any level the others reached. That is the astounding part the complete unexpectedness of the development. And they ask how it came to be? One answer only. Back of net beautiful face is a brain capable of turning out workmanship of the most delicate filigree in her art. She proves this most conclusively in her next Artcraft Picture, "The Sons of Songs."
Speed Up Production Texas Governor Sets Example Which All States Should Follow By P. G. IIOLDEN
GOVERNOR W. P. HOBBY of Texas has ta'ken a decided step in urging the people of his state to realize the seriousness of the food situation and to make, every effort possible to increase production In Texas. Governor Hobby Issued a proclamation naming February 10 as "Seed Sowing Sunday." That was a splendid example of a patriotic appeal. The governor of every state should follow his example. The American people, on the farms and in the cities and towns, must awaken to the great and immedi
ate need of the greatest production of food this country has even known. In his proclamation. Governor Hobby said, among other things:
"One grain of seed sowed and cultivated will provide a meal for a hungry soldier; one row of grain sowed and cultivated will feed a company; one acre of grain will feed a regiment, and so on. Let us look about us and bow this food for our soldiers until we see every vacant space, be It our ten-foot door yards, our small front lawns, our landed estates, or our thousands of acres, all smiling with a promising harvest. j Learn the Great Lesson. I . "Our State, which could under proper cultivation, supply one-fourth of the grain of the entire United States, can feed a good portion, therefore, of our great American army, and the variety of food grains which are oura wheat, corn, rice, oats, barley are the very best food for the very best men. The oldest, most heart-searching lessons in our Holy Book are lesson of cowing and reaping, planting and 'pothering, watering and increasing, so let US learn this greatest lesson and apply its magic truth. ,,.. "I respectfully request every minister of this State, Catholic, noa-Catbo-lic and Jewish, to deliver In his pulpit upon this day, or as near this day as possible, a sermon which will direct the minds and hearts of his congregation to the practical importance and bold necessity, even their obligations, to w seed and help feed the world. -. t , Teach, Preach, and Urge. I "I further request every Instructor In this State, In private, and public schools, college and university, to place before their students In unmistakable appeal the Importance of this suggestion and encourage them to act upon tt as soon as possible. J urge every mother and every father to plant food-producing grain, to utilise every available space in their premises now unused or not necessarily used, and to encourage their children to. cultivate It. Let every farmer and every planter who now cultivates only a portion of his land to cultivate all of it, for Texas this year does not want a fair crop or as average crop, but a phenomenal crop, the largest ever planted or gathered a this country. . With the consecration and conservation of our full energies this can be done and the blessing which will follow Is "beyond estimate. X believe our noble Texas will enter into this exalted expression of pure patriotism, remembering that If we do the planting God win. give the increase."
