Food Administration R e -gards with Disfavor Transforming of Saloons into Restaurants. INDIANAPOLIS. April 22. Saloon keepers who have transformed their businesses In to restaurants, lunch counters, confectlonarles and soft drink parlors will And their "disturbances by the law" are not ended. On the contrary, they may And the legal restrictions evenv more burdensome than before. Dr. Harry E. Barnard, federal food administrator for Indiana, who retains the office of State Food and Drug commissioner, has Issued a notice to all health officers and deputy food Inspectors calling their attention to the situation created by the action of many saloone keepers, saying in part: "While we have no desire to prevent saloon keepers from going Into other businesses, we do believe that there are bufftcient number of places handling food to accomodate the needs of the pubiic. We furthermore believe that the business of operating a restaurant is one which cannot properly be carried on by amateurs or inexperienced persons. "You are hereby requested to advise all persons who contemplate opening restaurants and confectlonarles that such action is not viewed with favor by the Federal Food Administration. "You are further requested as Health Officers and Food Inspectors to require the operation of places which may be opened In compliance with the Pure Food and Sanitary Food laws. Please see to It that all clerks and proprietors pass a medical examination to show their freedom from infectious and contagious disease. See to It that kitchens and dining rooms are sanitary and suitably equipped. In other words, require of every new business venture which has to do with the production or distribution of food a complete compliance with the laws which you enforce." .

HARVEST CORN CROP WITH HOGS

"Farmers of Wayne county who have practiced harvesting a part of their corn crop with hogs have agreed that "hogging off corn" should be practiced on every well managed farm where corn is grown and fed to hogs. Practical co-operative farm demonstrations have proven that greater profits result from this method of crop disposal than from most other methods. Gains are more rapid and more economical than when hogs are fed by hand, and the labor of harvesting and feeding the corn is saved. "Plant a field of corn and soybeans for hogging down. "It is a great satisfaction at the close of a strenuous day's work to know that your hogs are properly fed. Preparation lor this satisfaction should be made at corn planting time

ing the fall will not only give more

time to other fall work, but will allow you to market your hogs at a period when prices are generally higher and

profits greater.

"Soybeans as valuable as tankage as

a shipment.

"Demonstrations conducted with

two lots of pigs in different fields, us

ing corn and tankage in one lot and

corn and soybeans in another lot

show that the corn consumed per

pound gain was almost the same in both cases. This shows that soybeans if grown with the corn will take the place of high priced tankage or meat meal that many farmers are using. On the othe hand an experiment was conducted with two different lots of pigs, one lot was on corn alone and another lot on com and soybeans. In checking up the results it showed that the hogs on the corn alone lot produced only 819 pounds of pork for each bushel of corn consumed while those grazing on' corn and soybeans produced 11.9 pounds of pork on each bushel consumed. "The soybeans heip to maintain soil fertility, produce more economical pork, save labor, produce more rapid f.ains and by growing with corn there is greater assurance against crop failure and two crops are culitvated as cne. "Plan on sowing soybeans with the corn. Call at the office of the County Agent and get a list of men having soybeans for seed. Seed is scarce and It should be ordered at once. This office has a number of bulletins on soybeans, for free distribution." J. C. KLINE. Wayne County Agricultural Agt.
