TOLEDO, O.. April 13. Accused of being outwardly too pro-German, and for .refusing to purchase Liberty loan bonds, three residents of Holland, O., were aroused from their, sleep last midnight, taken into the streets, tarred and feathered and then brought to this city, where they were paraded in Liberty Court and forced to kiss a

large American silk flag. The men are Perry Hall, 26 years old. telegraph lineman and marshal of Holland: William Wagner, 45 years old. Justice of the peace, and J. J. Beattie, 32 years old, station agent for the New York Central lines at Holland. The three men were taken to the police station here by police, and are held without bond for government agents. ' The work of tarring the three men was done by a committe of men from this city. Hall and Wagner were asleep in their homes, -while Beattie, who -had -worked until 10 o'clock Saturday night, was alone with his wife in a rear room when the Toledo Vlgilants arrived. The three officials were quickly rounded up and taken to a spot near the railroad station in Holland and applied with a coat of tar and feathers. The three men were badly burned. They were stripped of their clothing and the greasy pitch spread over their bodies. The men then .were placed in automobiles arriving here about 2 o'clock in the morning. There were man hundreds of people still abroad. The men

were taken to Liberty Court, in Mad

ison street, in front of the Federal Building,- where they were forced to

kiss an American flag. Several members of the Vigilantes, all of whom

Mere undisguised, made speeches denouncing the three victims. None of

the Vigilantes were interrupted by

police.

D A? ECTOR OF THE DEPARTMENT OF MURSNG OF THE AMERCAN RED CROSS

Miss Jan A. Delano, director of

mo department or Nursing of the American Ked Cross, has. for eight

years, neen Dunning up. what is now the largest organization of trained

nurses in me worm. This is the ited Cross Nursing Service, with Its en

rollment of over 18.000 graduate

nursesIn the past year it has provides about 8,000 nurses for military duty for the United States Army and Navv

Nurse Corps and the United States

FOMlc Health Service, of which It Is the reserve, and directly under the Red Cross; and it la calling for recruits from every State In the Union. Miss Delano's professional preparation for her present service Is a fascinating story. In 188 when the terrible scourge of yellow fever broke tout Iri Jacksonville. Florida, and so deadly was the epidemic that human beings seemed helpless - against It. Miss Delano, then a young graduate nurse, appeared In Jacksonville with several trained nurses in her little company. The Infection of yellow fever through mosquitoes was not then known, but Miss Delano Ir-sisted on screening the windows of the hospital and neither she nor her nurses contracted the disense. They stayed until the right against yellow fever was won. Later, after having held the positions of superintendent of th Training Schools for Nurses at Re'levue Hospital. New York, and the hospital of the University of Pennsylvania St Philadelphia. Miss Delnno retired from active duty and went to Europe ,

with friends, expecting to make her residence there for some years. In a few weeks, however, she received an . official message asking her to return to take charge of the United States Army Nurse Corps and to organize the Nursing Service of the American Ked Cross. It was Miss Delano's unquestioning compliance with this patriotic call which led so defitntel.x to her great accomplishment at the end of eight years of arduous service, given without compensation and with ex

traordinary devotion.

The Ked Cross Nursing Service not only provides trained nurses for military duty and public health duty under the government, hut has a large corps of women-engaged in the Hed Cross Town and Country Nurs

ing Service, and large numbers of

women available for service in time

of public disasters.

A call may come u tne mommy from the Surgeon General of the

Army, asking for a group of women

highly skilled In . pecial surgery, contusions or psychiatric work for Immediate foreign service. And these

women, skilled through years of ex

acting training respond In the words

of one nurse somewhere in France:

"Thankful beyond words for the knowledge of how to care for the men who are ready to make every

sacrifice of sight, or limbs, or Independence, or life itself to defend our country."

The Red Cross Nursing Service is
