County Councils to Report Farmers Refusing to ( Till Land. INDIANAPOLIS. March 22. Farm land which owners refuse to cultivate will be seized by the federal government and be put to productive use. ' This statement is contained in a communication from the Indiana State Council of Defense to each of the county councils. County councils are requested to ascertain the names of farmers who refuse to cultivate their land or to rent It for cultivation and to call upon them to explain why. If not satisfactory reason is Riven the names of such persons will be forwarded to the State Council of Defense and thence to the federal government for action. Text of Order. The communication to the county .councils follows: "The Council of National Defense joins ' with the Food Administration and the United States department of agriculture in an urgent call for a larger production of food in 1918. These departments emphasize the importance of eliminating all slacker acres. It Is desired that ever available

acre of agricultural land to be made to produce food stuffs this year. The Indiana State Council of Defense joih3 fn this demand. "Many reports have come to the State Council indicating that there are farms and tracts of lands in towns which are not likely to be cultivated in 1918 unless some definite action Is taken to have the owners realize the importance of either operating these lands themselves or renting these

lands to others who will cultivate them. The County Council of Defense 1m urged to appoint a committee to list all of these farms and other tracts In the county for which arrangement has not been made for cultivation th's year. "The council should call upon the owners to show why these lands are not to be cultivated. They should be cultivated by the owners or rented at a reasonable price to someone who will handle them If these owners fail to stiow a reason why the lands are not to be cultivated and, will not rent the lands for U6e during this season the county council is instructed to forward the names Immediately to the office of the Ftate council. The state council will then forward the names to the United States government whlc'i through proper offices will proceed to take possession of the land and use it for the production of food. This is a most Important matter and should receive the immediate attention of every county council."

The red garden beet may be grown in any good soil, but rich sandy loam fill give the best results. The seed may be sown in spring as soon as the ground Is in condition to work. They may be planted two weeks before danger of frost Is past. If for horse cultivation, the rows should be from 2',i to 3 feet apart, or wide enough for the horse to walk between the rows. If for hand cultivation, the rows need not be more than 12 to IS inches opart. The usual custom Is to sow the seed somewhat closer together than the beets are desired, and after the beets are up, to Chin them from time to time, using the ones removed for greens until the beets finally are some 4 to 5 Inches apart in the rows. It should be remembered that what is commonly termed beet seed is really a seed ball, containing several individual seeds, and for this reason each one of these balls may bring from 3 to 4 plants. All of these plants except one process. Two ounces of the seed are sufficient to plant a 100-foot row. Beets should be planted in successIon at Intervals of about two weeks during the summer so as to have a supply of young tender beets at all times. The beets should be used before they exceed a diameter of 2 inches, as the young beets of moderate she are of much better quality than those allowed to make a greater growth. The beets that remain unused S durlng the latter part of the season should be allowed to grow until frost, 'pulled, trimmed and stored for winter use. If not desired for table use, they make an excellent stock or poultry feed, U. S. Department of Agriculture.
