BRINGING UP

CHOWOCR PARTY I rsSEE STAR FIVE FOR RICHMOND HI NEXT YEAR Only Two Regulars, Stegman and Van Allen, Will Be Left However. "With the basketball season closed, there Is nothing left to do but speculate on the possibilities of the 191819 basketball team of the Richmond high school. The new team will be minus several of Its old players and at present no one has appeared to fill the gaps made by the graduation of the followIn? players: "Shell" Simmons, captain and center of this year's team; R. Price, back guard; Graffls, floor guard; Robinson, forward, and Gardner, sub forward. However, the next team will have two regulars on Its lineup In Stegman and Van Allen, the two speedy forwards of this year's team. Manager Nohr said Tuesday that thfre would be sufficient forward material but as yet no center had turned up with any logical claim for the position. The addition of "Ernie" Porter as forward on the high school 1918-19 -basketball team will present a forward combination that will be hard to beat. High school fans are not worrying about the guard positions as guards can be developed but a center must have certain qualifications before layins claim to center. The tipoffs gained by Stegman In the district tournament at the Coliseum may give him that position on th now team and with Van Allen . and Porter as forwards, will leave the guard positions open to any new contestant. Clem Price, guard on the second team, with practice may be able to hold the position which was held by R. Price. Last year the prospects for an excellent basketball team were not as bright as this year. "Shell Simmons, sub forward of the 1916-17 team and -E. Shelton, regular back guard, were the only men that Coach Mullins had to start the season. Many younger players will be in the running next year. Among these players are Runnels, Motley and Monger, who are showing up well as basketball men. Quaker Seconds Defeat Negro Bdsketballers In an overtime game the Quaker seconds defeated the negro seconds by a 11 to 10 score at the Garfield gym Monday night. The game was fast and the men played a strong defense on both the teams. The score at the end of the second half stood 10 to 10. In the first five minutes of overtime no goals were made by either team and not until the second overtime play had started wa3 a point made. Gardner, of the Quaker seconds. made a free throw and ended the game, 11-10. Prospects Bright for Winning Basket Team at Earlham Next Year j The splendid record made by this year's Earlham basketball five and the fact that no seniors are on the team seems to insure Earlham of a winning team for next year barring the possible changes which the war may bring about. Considering that all the Earlham basketball five's practice was on its floor at Earlham and that it played all its home games on the Coliseum floor and the Earlham Hve made an excellent showing. If Fred Fulton is wise he will immediately book up a bout with this young Jack Dempsey and have it over before the lad gets too good for him. It's a cinch that Dempsey has shown himself to be worthy of a bout with Fulton, and Willard too, for that matter, but the experts agree that Dempsey is not yet the Star that he's going to be. He is still a kid and still developing and in the opinion of quite a few he is another and heavier Stan Ketchell. Ketchell, it will be remembered, came to the front In just such a sensational manner as Dempsey has. And Dempsey is the same style of battler. If Fred Fulton tries to avoid a mate hwlth Dempsey now he may find that he'll have to meet him later when the kid knows more and would be an even much tougher opponent' There is no doubt as to the identity of the pitcher who will work in the first game of the Chicago Cubs this coming season. His name is Grover Cleveland Alexander. Colonel Ebbets is one of several major league men who believe that Kanas City some day will have a club in one of the big circuits. Kansas City, in the American association last year, made plenty of money. The games drew large crowds all season. Some tme ago President Johnson of the Amercan league put in a boost for Kansas City, declaring that it ought to have a franchise in major league company. The only drawback is Kansas City's distance from Chicago and St. Louis, but when the war is over and baseball is reorganized, Missouri's prosperous tawju.may finally get into the cnarmea circle. k Three major league teams have engaged new managers, while the leader of another will be on trial this year. Edward G. Barrow has succeeded Jack Barry as the manager of the Boston Red Sox. Miller Huggins will make his bok in Ban,. Johnson's circuit as the mentor of the Yankees. Jack Hendricks, successful in the minors, will handle the Cardinals. Hugo Bezdek, who took hold of the Pirates last summer, will have another chance to come through. Barrow, Stalllngs and Mack are the only bench managers who will wear Btreet clothes. All of NEED OF IRON NOW Aallments Due to Insufficient Iron Common In Spring. According to Billy Evans, Joe Bush frequently delivers more speedy pitches in a game than Walter Johnson, yet Evans does not rate Bush as speedier than the Washington star. Connie Mack evidently believes that Connecticut is a fertile field for shortstops. Jack Barry came from that state, as did his successor, Billy kopf, and Joe Dugan ( is another native of the Nutmeg State. Al Brldwell, the former Giant, Is anxious to get a tryout with Joe Tinker's Columbus club. Eddie Clcott is one of the few twirlers who is his own coach during the training season. The Nashville club of the Southern association will start the season with only two members who were with the team last summer. They are Shortstop Ellman, who manages - the club, and First Baseman Kaufman. The draft and trades took all the others. Women's Tournament is Feature of State Meet i SOUTH BEND, Ind., March 19. A women's tournament will be one of the features of the ninth annual bowling championship of Indiana in South Bend April 6 to 20. Already teams have been entered from South Bend, Mishawaka, Goshen, Gary, and Fort JVayne. South Bend's representation includes six five-women teams. Entries for the tournament continue to pour in from all over the state, and according to Samuel S. Gentle, the list will close March 24 with the biggest number of entrants ever listed for an Indiana meeting. Because of the unusual large number of bowlers who will compete in the tournament it was necessary to make the tournament run one week longer than usual.
