"One of 'Em" 'Tut me down as a capitalist," said a young draftee standing in line at the recruit receiving station of Camp Devens, Mass. His weekly wage had been $3,S89. Now he bunks alongside $18 a week men. He's drawing $30 a month with former brick masons, teachers, cobblers, machinists. "He's just a regular fellow, like most of the rest of them," said a sergeant with enthusiasm. The incident is typical of America. The army has become a vast family where men of all nationalities and all walks of life are fraternizing and learning the one great business in which the civilized world is engaged soldiering to whip Germany. Talk to any of our boys who have visited here on a furlough and you'll obtain a new vision of American democracy. The melting pot has done its work. Before we entered the war, we read how impossible it would be to mould descendants of Slav, French, Italian, Bohemian, Jew, German and American parents into a national unit. But the army training camp has done it. The plea of humanity, asking liberty-lovers to prove forever that the principle of democracy is not decadent but virile and potent enough to overcome racial prejudices has met with a hearty response. . The soldier boys in our camps, sleeping in the same bunks, eating at the same tables, marching side by side, gradually saturating their minds and souls with the great obligation which freemen owe the world, have overcome the impossible. One America, knowing no difference as to race or station, is marching to France. For every soldier that crosses, seven persons are marching arm in arm to the Liberty Loan stations to buy American bonds, subscribe for American thrift and war stamps, give for the Red Cross and 'the Y. M. C. A. Brotherhood has taken on a new meaning in the last year. One cause has healed old sores, trampled down old animosities, welded us into one American tool, designed for the destruction of autocracy and tyranny.
Conquest and Kultur "The more it German kultur remains faithful to itself, the better will it be able to enlighten the understanding of foreign races absorbed or incorporated into the Empire, and to make them see that only from German kultur can they derive those treasures which they need for the fertilizing of their own particular life And what glorious results will not victory bring to Germany herself ? A victorious peace will mean the release of world-conquering energy for our industrial life the losses suffered in the war, whatever they may come to, shall be made up, the black-
white-and-red flag shall wave over all seas, our
countrymen will hold highly respected posts in all parts of the world, and we will maintain and extend our colonies. The whole world shall stand open to us, so that, in untrammelled rivalry we shall unfold the energy of the German nature." Otto von Gierke, "War and Culture," in Deutsche Reden in Schwerer Zeit (1914). -I. 93-96. The author is a most distinguished professor of law in the University of Berlin.
The Fire Alarm By Roger W. Babson
T
HIRTY-TWO was the box number. This meant
that the fire was near our house. I at once put on my coat and hat and went to the corner. True
enough, great clouds of smoke were already pouring out of a hotel opposite. The fire apparatus was beginning to arrive. First came a hose-and-ladder truck; next came two steamers; then came a patrol wagon with policemen to prevent looting; following was an ambulance with a doctor and nurses. Even the insurance companies were represented by a truck with rubber blankets to spread on goods in the store below.
No questions were asked as to who owned that building or whether the inmates were rich or poor; there was no jealousy between the different branches of service. The firemen, the doctors, and the insurance agents all co-operated with one single aim, namely, to put out the fire. And in half an hour the fire was out.
France is now ablaze. Over there are our brothers and neighbors. With hearty co-operation between stockholders and workers, between employers and employees, we can get there in time to save democracy. I believe that we are going to see such co-operation. I know that all my readers are going to do their best. Did you ever think what it is about a fire which thrills us? Did you ever wonder why our blood tingles and our heart throbs as the fire trucks rush by? Well, the real reason is because a spirit of co-operation then fills the air. When there Is a fire, everyone wants to help, and so we then want to help. Wanting to help starts the blood running through our veins, and we have a new feeling and a new experience. That's coope ration!
The first ones you got a month ago." Then we interviewed said son. aged six years. , "Yes, daddy, I got the pills," he said. "What on earth did you want with Fifteen or twenty boxes of them?" we asked. "Well," he said, "the ones they sent you first Fitted in my airgun just fine, and after I Had used them all up I went and got more. You don't care, do you?" At that it was about the best use For the pills. Better watch Trotzky and his gang. They may retreat into Alaska, and then we will have them on our hands.
The kaiser: "God is on my side." Abraham Lincoln: "I hope that I am on God's side." Lincoln was an old-fashioned statesman.
The kaiser, in sending congratulations to Hindenburg, predicted for him a brilliant future. Well, he has a brilliant future behind him.

The Food Administration Says: Use foods that are produced near your homo. If everybody does this, it will lessen immeasurably the number of freight cars required for hauling food. Freight cars can then be used for hauling munitions and other war supplies, and foods for eastern seaports to be shipped for Europe. Use vegetables, fruits and meat from nearby sources.

DINNER 5TORIEJ" The other day a man walked into a barber shop and deposited upon a table a number of articles which he took from a satchel. "This is pomad"." he said. "I am well supplied." said the barker. "This is shaving cream." "I see it is." "Here Is some fine bay rum " "1 don't doubt it, but I make my own." "Here is some patent cosmetic for the mustache." Says Inside-bathing makes anyone look and feel clean, sweet and refreshed.
Wash yourself on the inside before breakfast like you do on the outside. This is vastly more important because the skin pores do not absorb impurities into the blood, causing illness, while the bowel pores do. For every ounce of food and drink taken into the stomach, nearly an ounce of waste material must be carried out of the body. If this waste materia! is not eliminated day by day it quickly ferments and generates

Rheumatism is A Lot Better Tells How Tanlac Radium Treatment Helped Him Benefited in 3 Days. Robert Malcolm, 68. of 1317 Walnut street, Cincinnati, Ohio, says he has found a certain source of relief in Tanlac Rheumatism Medicine after suffering from the aches and pains of rheumatism for five years. Tanlac Rheumatism Treatment is the new treatment for rheumatism which contains radium. "I live on the third floor and it used to be that I could hardly climb the stairs to my flat because of the severe rheumatic pains in my knees and the calves of my legs but I can climb up to my flat a whole lot easier now and I've only been taking this Tanlac Rheumatism Treatment for three days," said Mr. Malcolm. "I'm a carpenter by trade and lots of my work makes it necessary for me to get down on the floor on my knees. The rheumatic pains used to be so bad that I could hardly get to my feet after working on the floor on my knees. "The pains kept me awake at night, too. Sometimes it felt like my legs were being pulled off of me. The lack of sleep and rest made me feel
bad in mornings and sometimes I couldn't go to work. "I was surprised that Tanlac Rheumatism Treatment should help me so quickly. The pains have gone away so much i;ow that the last two nights I have slept better than I have for weeks. I can get to my feet better
j after working on my knees, too. Only
yesterday I was doing some floor rer pairing and after I got through with the job I was surprised at. how easily I could get to my feet. "I believe that with a thorough trial Tanlac Rheumatism Treatment will rid me entirely of my rheumatism and I am sure strong for this medicine and recommend it."
