Tagore, Indian Poet, Plotted With Germans to Foment Revolution
SAN FRANCISCO, CM., Feb. 2S. Definite connection of Sir Rabindranath Tasore, celebrated Indian poet, and high officials of the German government with an alleged conspiracy to foment revolution against British rule In India, was established today, according to contentions of the prosecution, by introduction into evidence at the trial of 31 alleged conspirators of letters and cablegrams seized by British censors. The correspondence, according to counsel for the government, came into the bands of British censors on the way from Rye. N. Y., to Rotterdam, Copenhagen and other European points. At the time ths letters and messages
were sent, the attorneys contended, Rye was the temporary headquarters
or the German Embassy. The documents had just been received from the state department by the
prosecution and were Introduced under agreement made yesterday when the
government rested its .case. Alfred Zimmerman, former German secretary of state for foreign affairs; Count von Luxburg, former German Ambassador to Argentina, and Count on Bernstorff, former German ambassador to the United States, were the German officials implicated by the documents, according to the prosecution's contention. Many of the letters and cablegrams bore no signature and 6ome of them carried no address. Sir Rabindranath was Implicated in the conspiracy, the prosecution maintained, by a document which was sent to Z. N. G. Olifiers at Amsterdam from Rye. "Sir Rabindranath Tagore has come at our suggestion." the message read. "He said be saw Count Okuma, former Japanese Premier, and Count Terauchl present Premier. "Terauchl was favorable. Sir Rabindranath also consulted a number of minor Japunese officials." ; The poet was interested in the conspiracy in order to obtain a change in Indian Government by constitutional means, according to a statement madei
today by Taraknath Das, one of the Hindu defendants. The meaning of the message to Olifiers at Amsterdam was not explained, nor was Olifiers sentenced. An unsigned letter to R. Saohse, Rotterdam, dated January 21, 1916, said: ''Dr. Chakravarty will return to the United States to form a new Ameri
can committee, which will include Ram Chandra and himself. He has agreed to eend an agent to the West Indies where there are 100,000 Indians, and also to British Guinea, Java and Sumatra, and to conduct secret propaganda in America. "It also is proposed to send a mission to Japan. Dr. Chakravarty will get safe conduct." Dr. Chandra K. Chakravarty and Ram Chandra are two of the chief Hindu defendants. Sent Prcm New York. A letter from New York under date of May 2, 1916, to H. Elsenhuth, Cop
enhagen, which was unsigned, said:
"I doubt whether my health will
permit a trip to the coast. I am send ing Rogers to Japan. We have organ
ized the Pan-Asiatic League, but it will
not be necessary to buy the two Japanese dallies, as they are agreeable to
our interest;;, and they have decided to
attack the Anglo-Japanese treaty."
Count von Bernstorf f, in writing
from Rye under date of June 16, 1916. to Olifiers at Amsterdam, said: "The first batch to reach its destination has reported its success. "Many are afraid that' if arms are not available soon there will be premature uprisings in India. Fifty thousand copies. of 'Why the Indians Are Revolting Against the British Rule' are available. The work In Japan is going along unusually well."
