Rev. J. S. Benson, platform manager of the Richmond Chautauqua last year, has been appointed executive secretary of the national war council of the Methodist Episcopal church. Rev. Mr. Benson was born and reared near Richmond, Just acrofs the Ohio Mate line. lie 13 to lead the Mcthodlsta of the United States In a campaign which Involves the holding of rallies in 250 ciiles. and the raising of $1,000,000 tor work among the soldiers in the United States and also for work among the distressed in France and Belgium.

MARKED IMPROVEMENT IN CONDITION OF ROOSEVELT

NEW YORK. Feb. 13. A fmarked , improvement in the condition of Col. Theodore Roosevelt was announced at j Roosevelt hospital this morning. He j

passed a comfortable night and awakened at 7 o'clock, greatly refreshed.

Mrs. Roosevelt spent some time early

in the day at the bedside.

Richmond Boy Abroad Made Gun Corporal Owen J. Webb, son of Mrs. 130 North-Seventh street, who is "somewhere In France," In a letter to his mother, Eavs he has been made a gun corporal. "I am now a gun corporal, that is what I wanted when I started," he says. Harold Scott, a graduate of the Richmond High school, and Purdue university is first lieutenant of Webb's company.

Plans for the new practical nursing class at the high school have been completed. The members of the class are: Edna Fasiek. Mildred Mosor. Mary Ray.' Grace Trotter, Hilda Harper. Dorothy Hartzler, Florence Rowe, Bcsettia Hutchins. Helen Edgerton, Marjorie Ktnworthy, Edna Dorsey, and Dorothy Daniels. Girls who are not students at the high school may join the class.

ATLANTIC CITY. N. J.. Feb. 13. The executive commission of the Presbyterian assembly in session here yesterday declared that the the war will not cause the abandonment of the work in foreign missions, it was stated that h substantial increase would be made to the two million dollars apptonriated for the work during the currit year.

Women of First English Lutheran church will sew Thursday at the church for the Red Cross. All the sewing tomorrow will be machine work, as the supply of hand work is exnausted fcr the present time. All women of the church are invited.
