ized to appoint a committee of grocers and consumers or others, to pass upon this vitally important matter. It is to be understood, Dr. Barnard says, that prices so determined are not compulsory, except in so far as grocers subject themselves to an indictment for profiteering. "Adjacent counties should guard carefully against unfair differences in their interpretations." ,
Wipe Out the Y. M. C. A. Debt The local organization of the Y. M. C. A: needs $8,000 to meet all requirements of the 1918 budget. An enterprising band of men .hopes to raise this sum in a short and fast campaign. The sum is not of such staggering figures that it cannot be paid off without much effort. A little community effort, plus concentrated energy, coupled with a disposition to give a few dollars, will do the trick. It is a waste of paper to set out at great length the advantages of a Y. M. C. A. in a community. The local organization has demonstrated its efficacy a thousand times over. The intangible and invisible good of the Y. M. C. A. cannot be estimated in dollars or measured in pounds or feet, for it is a spiritual endowment that enriches the soul and uplifts the life of the boys. During the last year the local Y. M. C. A. furnished six war secretaries, 68 members have gone into service ; 40 tnembers of the gym classes enlisted ; 25 members have become officers.
The worth of the organization in 1918 is to be measured by the full scope of its great war work in the cantonments at home and the camps abroad, and not by the local environment. The local organization here and elsewhere made possible the spontaneous response of the national organization to the sudden mobilization of our fighting force.!. If the local associations had not trained men as secretaries and perfected a machine that knew "how to handle young men and cater to their interests, the war work of the Y. M. C. A. instead of being a marvelous achievement would have been a miserable fizzle. And so the support we give the local association is a patriotic endorsement of the war work which the national organization is carrying on. The success with which the Y. M. C. A. is carrying on its far flung war work pre-supposes a highly organized and efficent piece of machinery at home. To keep the local association in fighting trim, it is necessary to provide the $8,000 required. The response of the community will not disappoint the campaign leaders.
Watch for Poisoned Seed G. I. Christie, superintendent of the agricultural extension department of Purdue University, has sent broadcast through the state the appended warning asking farmers to watch out for poison in the seed : Rumors rife in Indiana the last few weeks that poisonous pollen had been placed in small grain seed supplies or would b put in them before planting time the coming spring by German plotters has caused considerable stir among farmers of the state. While botanists in the Agricultural Experiment Station of Purdue University scout the theory of pollen being spread in the oats or other small grain seeds, they state that smut or other disease germs might be mixed in seed stocks with disastrous effects. Several serious plant diseases exist in Germany which are not found, in this country and these might be introduced in, this country in this way, the botanists said. These diseases could not be detected on the seed by an ordinary examination and the only way to guard against the chance of this deadly work by Teutonic plotters, if they have been busy in this or any other state, would be to treat the seed as it is treated for smut prevention under directions of the local county agent or Purdue University. Investigations are under way to determine the source Of tbese rumors, but to be tafe, every farmer is urged to take precautions in buying his seed oats this spring and to see that all of it is treated properly with formalin to overcome, before the seed is put into the ground, any German deviltry. Although Professor Christie does not accept as a proved fact the dissemination of plant diseases, he, nevertheless, believes it is possible and asserts that "German deviltry" would not overlook the perpetration of the trick. Some of Germany's Kultur, as it showed itself in the invasion of Roumania, and some of the Kaiser's tactics in spreading propaganda among Italian soldiers, inducing them shamelessly to
surrender under the impression that the war was ' over, indicate that our foe will stoop to the low-
est depths of infamy to win the war. Professor Christie is judging the poisonous pollen theory by the past practices of Germany, and so, to be abso
lutely sure that the Kaiser's plan is thwarted, he j advises farmers to exercise extreme care in the! handling of seed this spring. And it behooves I the farmer to follow the advice of the Purdue ex- i pert. j

Se8 by the papers one of the American aviators was pursued by five German planes, but got back to French soil safely. In other words, he had an aero escape. Ho-hum. It may be a little early yet, but in order not to miss anything it may be well to mention that the 1920 nominations for the presidency have been firmly settled. According to authority which cannot be questioned, the Democrats who wijl receive th presidential nomination will be Secretary of War Baker, Director of Railroads MeAdoo, Secretary Josephus Daniels, Franklin K. tane. Champ Clark, W. J. Bryan and James Hamilton Lewis. The Republican presidential nomination will go to Theodore Roosevelt, Elihu Root, Senator Pomerene, Joe Cannon. The' Cash and Carry Plan To clear up some mistaken notions regarding the cash and carry plan which Indiana grocers are adopting, and under consideration by dealers here. The Indiana State Council of Defense has issued the following explanation: "The cash and carry plan of merchandizing is intended not so much to abolish the delivery system as to establish a price for which foodstuffs are to be sold for cash over the country. "This interpretation of the new system of retailing, to which Indiana grocers are pledged, is being announced to county food administrators by Dr. Harry E. Barnard, federal food administrator for Indiana. "It has been apparent that a misunderstanding as to the exact purpose of the federal food administration, has existed in "many quarters and Dr. Barnard's statement is expected to encourage
many grocers to adopt the policy who have ob-; jected to a complete abandonment of their de-; livery service. i From u
"When credit or delivery service is rendered, it is to be paid for. The accepted delivery charge is six cents for each delivery and the charge cost, an added cent per month on the dollar. "Already many cash and carry grocers are in successful operation. They report increased business and a reduction of prices ranging from eight to ten percent.
