yaaaiiiiBiiiiiBiftiM On The Screen WASHINGTON There are several remarkable examples of the visualizing power of the screen in Mae Marsh's new Goldwyn starring vehicle, "The Cinderella Man," which is to be seen at the Washington theatre, today and Saturday, that make it seem that there is very little after all that may not be made clear with pictures alone. It was once thought that the limitations of pantomime were well indicated by a little joke of James M. Barrie made one day when he was watching the rehearsal of a new play under direction of Granville Barker. Barker had just told an actor to go up stage, open a book, and show by the expression of his face that he had wealthy relatives living In Sunderland, meaning simply that the actor was to show that he was better cultivated than the other characters in the play. Whereupon Barrie told another actor to come downstage, turn his back to the audience and show by the express ion of his shoulders that he had a brother-in-law who drank port in Shropshire. MURRAY They met headwn in a turn on a lonely country road and both cars stopped with a splintering of glass, in the Triangle play, "Betty Takes a Hand," starring Olive Thomas at the Murray theatre. This was Betty Marshall's introduction to James Bartlett, multi-million aire politician, and the man who had once been her father's partner In a mining venture. Now Betty's father was poor, while Bartlett was rolling in wealth. Peter Marshall had vowed tohis daughter that Jim Bartlett had swindled him. Then followed a far graver situation. Both machines were permanently disabled in an attempt to get them back on the road. It was fast becoming dark and they were thirty miles from help. After Bartlett had sent his chauffeur for help, Betty, without disclosing her identity, took charge of the situation and a never-to-be-forgotten night followed for the pair in a mountain canyon. The child s resourcefulness won the heart of the old millionaire and he ended by offering her $30,000 to marry his son Tom, who bad but recently run away from home. Betty Marshall knew more about Tom than did his father, and the big surprise of this Triangle comedy drama is how Betty's brains won the husband of her choice in 6pite of unusual obstacles. The Tiller Sisters, a couple of good looking young girls, one of whom Is a clever comedienne put on a neat singing number, while the Tennessee Trio in their minstrel novelty virtually "bring down the house," with their singing, dancing and musical numbers.
