Both Richmond high school basketball teams lost to the superior Anderson fives on the Anderson floor Friday night, the high school BeecondB by the score of 14-3 and high school varsity by the score 34-12. In the first game of the evening the effects of poor training showed, while the Anderson second toam starred. The team, crippled by theleaving of the Schafer.?, has not reached a scale where it can play fast, well trained teams. The same lack of training prevailed in the necond game of the evening's bill' an in the first. The Richmond high school team, although playing a fast floor game, did it at the expense of accuracy. Milltr-Brown Strong. In the second game, Coach Mullins' proteges were unable to handle the fast, accurate Miller-Brown combination which managed to run in eleven field goals throughout the game. Simmon3 played a splendid game, fighting hard to put Richmond high school basketball team prestige back on the map. Simmons' three free
throws in the basket out of four Richmond team's play, attempts, was the feature of the February 1, Richmond high school plays the fast Martinsville five at Richmond and next Friday it plays the Eaton five on the Eaton floor. The score: FIRST GAME Richmond High School

Ball players this season will have the enjoyment of toting their uniforms around the circuit with them, as in the days of yore. They will pack their monkey-suits, as they are known to the. trade, right In a little old suitcase and be their own baggage men. The players of more recent years have always had wardrobe trunks wherein to waft their costumes, from one town to another, but with, the rail
roads up against it in various ways the players will have to see to their own luggage. Last season when there was a railroad strike threatening the secretary of the New York Yanks dashed out and ordered thirty large steel grips for the players, and for the rest of the season the Yanks packed their duds with thera. So the Yanks wfll be in good training for the stunt next season. The players of the other big league clubs will have to get the habit. Those who have no valets and there are a number of them might -hire a caddy to help them out in the difficulty. Buck Herzog first joined the major leagues under the name of McGhee with the Phillies and Eddie Collins began his major league career under the name of Sullivan. Harry Tate, ex-ball player he was with the Athletics a few seasons back and the heavyweight who won from Fulton on a foul, has the distinction of having been the world's champion for a period of several weeks. Now that Fulton has flattened Tate upon meeting him a second time the heavyweight title returns to Fred. But the way Fulton figures Tate was really the world's champ for that brief space. In order to get the idea it must be understood that Fulton is now the world's champion, having claimed the title when Willard . didn't come through with a reasonable offer to meet him. " However all that may be, Tate "has announced thafc he will retire from the prize ring and take up baseball again. He will probably enjoy it more at that. Tate was managed by a wise head, however, old Billy McCarney, who Had Luther Mccarty at the time the youngster was going his greatest clip. Macromber, who owns the biggest stables in America, was the largest turf winner last season, with a sum of $68,578. WT. S. Kilmer was second with $64,902, and H. P. Whitney third with $59,000 The Pacific Coast league will start

its circuit, Sacramento taking the place of Portland. Tony Brottem, the Cardinals' young catcher, has been released to the Little Rock club t)f the Southern association. Branch Rickey expects to sign a college backstop very shortly. Jack Dunn is agitating a movement to have the headquarters of the International league shifted from New York to Baltimore, but as yet he hasn't won over any of the other club owners in that circuit to his idea.
THOUGHTS TO THINK ABOUT. Bitterness against human being for a good cause blinds you to all of nature's beauties; your morbid senses murder happiness. Pessimism is a pygmy, not a power; it puts a brake on progress and never booses you onward. Fate whispers "to exist you must persist"; you are as you desire and you fare as you dare dogged determination delivers the oods. BOSTON, Jan. 19. After sending Jest Barnes to the Giants and George Tyler to the Cubs, George Stallings has so depleted the Braves pitching strength that it looks like he will have to put most of his dependence next season on young Artie Nehf, the Braves' kid southpaw. John Scott, a youthful right-hander, appears to be a good prospect, but just what he will do is uot yet a known quantity. It has been seen that Stallings has a high opinion of Nehf and' the opinion is shared by many others in the National league. More than a few declare Nehf to vbe the best southpaw in the league today. He came to the Braves from Terre Haute of the Central league in the middle of the 1915
season and immediately pitched three shut-outs just to show that he had his nerye with him in fast company. In 1916 Nehf did not work in as many games as did the rest of the Braves' pitchers, but the pitching he did was of a high enough order to land him well upward toward the top of the pitching lists. Last year he had a good season, but he is yet a bit too young in the big show to be as widely celebrated os any one of the Braves' once illustrious trio, Tyleer, Rudolph and James. Stallings hopes that Bill James will be vith the Braves to pitch more than a few games next season and he is
banking considerably on the reliable
