LARGE GAINS IN HOG PRODUCTION
LAFAYETTE. Ind., Dec. 24. Indiana will go "over the top" la the 1918 bos production campaign, figures compiled today by the Extension Department of Purdue University as result of In- recent campaign throughout tbe state, show. The increase next year will be 21 percent over 1917, according to conservative estimates made from reports from the seventyfour leading hog producing counties in the state. The promised Increase is pne percent more than was asked by the United State Department of Agriculture. Practically 3,000 Indiana farmers promised at the production meetings last month to keep one or more gilt3 extra in their herds this winter: These extra gilts are expected to bring about the Increased production next spring. Prof. J. W. Schwab,. who has. been in charge, said the campaign would be made permanent in the state. STARS AND STRIPES FLOAT OVER SHAFT PARIS, Dec. 24. was draped with crepe and for which flowers and bunting were substituted In August, 1914, today flies the Stars and Stripes alongside the French Tricolor. Tbe American and French flags were raised over the monument to tbe Alsatian city yesterday afternoon in the presence of a large crowd, which, in spite of the biting frost, uncovered as tbe two emblems were unfurled. American Ambassador Sharp and a number of delegates from societies of natives of Alsace-Lorraine, were present The flags were raised in the name of the General Alsatian-Lorraine Association of America and the World League of New York; Jules Siegfried, president of the Alsatian societies and deputy from Havre, and Maurice Barres of the, French Academy were the speakers. Too Bad! Turkeys Fail to Arrive at Camps in France FRANCE. .. Monday Dec. . 4. The great bulk of the American expeditionary force will not get its expected Christmas dinner. The submarine attack which forced the. ship which was carrying cranberries to turn back, and through some unknown circumstances two ships which were carryin the supplies of turkey left the United States so late that it was impossible for them to arive in France in time. The turkeys which already have arrived in the army zone were left over from Thanksiving and will go an extremely short way. The quartermaster's corps is busy trying to procure a substitute, but the army is really disappointed, for turkey at Christmas had been looked forward to by virtually every member of the command. The quartermaster had made careful preparations, but his calculations went wrong. Now it appears that the principal dish of the day will be "monkey turkey," which is ordinarily canned corned beef.
On The Screen
WASHINGTON., S ' One of the real screen novelties of the year is "All for a Husband." , the new Wiliam Fox feature, starring the accomplished Virginia Pearson. If you have come to believe that there is nothing new under the 'sun which shines on the photoplay world, go to the first theatre that shows .'A ll for a Husband" and rejoice in finding a picture that is distinctly "different', Mis Pearson, always a versatile1 actress, has adual role calling for the most exacting character portrayal.
MURRETTE William Russell, star of adventure drama, and known from coast to coast as ".The Adnois of the Screen," had to rescue Joe King, a member of his com

In the course of the play. King, who is cast as Portuguese Joe, leader of a
band v of mutineers, attacks Russell
while both are lying out on the seventy-foot yard arm of the schooner.
"Southern Cross."
"Come at me as though you meant to kill me," ordered Russell, and King
slid along the footropes like the good yachtsman he is, pinning "Big Bill"
back down against the flapping sail,
nearly breaking him in two.
When Russell got out from under
he gave King a heave that sent him spinning off the yard into fifty fathoms of water. "Hey! that guy struck a stanchion,"
yelled one of the deck hands, but Rus
sell already knew what had happened and he bit tbe water nearly as soon
as King did.
Many tons of hay from the Swiss mountains have been exported to Germany to be used as tea. The hay consists chiefly of aromatic plants and is gathered with much difficulty in the high altitudes. The price paid for this hay is between $5 and $8 for 100 pounds.
