RENEW PROGRAMS I IN SLAV REALM
1 PARIS, Dec. 10. (By Mail). Despite the revolution the situation of Jews in Southern Russia is more desperate than under the Czar's regime. In the Skirva . district two programs nave Just been reported in which large numbers of Jews ruthlessly were masacred and their homes and shops looted and burned. . vBut in the invaded districts of Lithuania, where the German army rules, their condition is even more terrible. Authentic information which has just reached here from M. David-Simon-bon, former chief rabbi" of Copenhagen, bears this out. Jews in Lithuania have been more severely persecuted by the German invader than by their Russian oppressors. ' Very soon after the Germans penetrated into Lithuania the authorities began to introduce new restrictions for the Hebrew population after abolishing some of the abuses of-the old regime. "Municipal loans" were levled upon them. , Assess Heavy Tax. ' At Vilna. with a population 50 percent Jewish, a tax of 1,000.000 rubles (about $500,000) was imposed upon the city. The Jews were forced to pay SOO.000 rubles. Whoever could not pay his' proportionate share . was imprisoned and the community held liable" for" the amount' " Tht?n followed enforced labor of the tntife' Jewish population. Men, and women, many of them sick, were sent to concentration camps and compelled to do the heaviest sort of manual labor on rations dealt out to Russian prisoners. In addition they received eeven cents a day. In another community young girls were called upon to labor in the fields. In many Instances Jewish mothers hid their daughters. When the daughters wore not produced, the Germans seized the mothers, tore them away from their homes and sent them to distant parts under guard of soldiers. In their csperation many women killed ihenalelves. . To -alleviate misery in cities and towns the invaders decided to send a certain proportion of the male population to work in the fields. , ,"At Vllna 400 Jewish youths were locked up in freight cars and sent on a' journey. At the expiration of three days, during which the prisoners were without food or water and bo packed together that they could not sit down, the seals of the cars were broken and they were released. Sixty-two had cijed. Fifteen died later from the effects of their sufferin. j This Cow Work Hard ; MINNEAPOLIS, Minn., Dec. 24. A finfirnsev cow of the University of

EFFECT OF BRITISH SHELL FIRE
' Sk mmmm
The effect of British shell fire around Passchendaele Just before the British took the village is graphically shown in th nhota taken from a German orisoner.
Some of the most interesting photographs of the war, to those on the allied side of the fence, are those of events and places on . the Teuton side of the fighting lines. These are rare, being obtainable for the most part only when they are on the person of German prisoners.
The remarkable picture shown was recently obtained in that way from a prisoner taken in the recent British advance on the western front. The German said the picture had been taken in Passchendaele just before the. British dash which advanced
beyond the little village. It shows a house being demolished by the shellfire from a fautlessly aimed 15-ineh howitzer. It apparently had been fortified as a blockhouse. The shattered timbers have caught fire.

THE ARMY The Army took her boy, The mother's heart was numb, For with him went her joy; The household seemed a tomb. Down where the engines speed I stood the crowd among; The sight was sad indeed; And anguish filled the throng. 'Twas anguish mixed with fear. How plainly one could trace The sentimental tear Upon the boy's pale face. That was some months ago. When Richmond first beheld Her wards and striplings go, And war's full meaning felf. Now comes the Christmas tide; The boy on furlough come; The mother walks beside And proudly leads him home. Gone are his ways uncouth Our Main Street sees instead, . A happy, healthy youth. Erect, and khaki-clad. How great the mother's joy The world seems bright again. The Army took her Boy And brought him back a Man! JACOB B. HORWITT. Dec. 24, 1017.
