What? War Has Ho Effect on the Price of Christmas Trees
The first Christmas trees are here. And strange to say, dealers report that the war has bad no effect on the prices despite the fact that the trees are scarcer than ever before. But the delight of the kiddies will feel war's effect. The trees will not hp decorated as cavlv aa in th rust.
unless one has Christmas decorations'
left over from years before. 1 Merchants say that never before have they faced the holiday season with such a limited stock of Christmas tree decorations. . And as a result Christmas trees in many homes, will not be decorated as they were in days bygone. The strings of popcorn, plain white, and dipped in molasses will take the place of the bright gold tinsel rope. And after all the kiddies will be made to realize that the United State is in war, and men are enlisting in the service of the government instead of making Christmas tree decorations to gladden the hearts of the children.
HEALTH OF MEN IS IMPROVING
WASHINGTON,' Dec 20. The war department has complied with all but one of Surgeon General Gorgas' recommendations for betterment of training camp conditions Secretary Baker has announced and a general improvement in the health of the men, already not' ed by field sanitation officers in reports on national guard divisions, is expected to result. The secretary, in explaining steps taken by the department, pointed out the reports upon which action was taken were received for the most part, two weeks or more ago. Woolen uniforms for all troops have provided and are either at the camps or enroute to them. Secretary Baker asserted. His statement was made yesterday co-incident with the publication of the report of the division of field sanitation for the week ending Dec. 14, disclosing improvement in health conditions in national guard divisions, but an increase in the number of pneumonia, measles and meningitis cases in a few national army cantonments. The only step recommended by General Gorgas which remained to be acted upon, Secretary Baker said, Is that regarding the establishment of observation camps, in which shall be gathered all new recruits tor a period of two weeks, before the men pass into company organization at the training camps.
