player The training trip in the spring, pne of baseball's most fascinating phases,, is to be passed up next season it appears and many fans and players will mourn to hear of it. The most recent dope from the big league offices indicates that as a measure of war economy almost all of the big league clubs will cut out the camps next spring. Thus the fan. must part with the very engrossing dope that la yearly sent north from the training camps and the player must start the season without the conditioning that he has always enjoyed after vigorous workout under the Dixie sun. Players who are wise and who wish to make a good showing next season will spend their winters in healthful pursuits and will not show up next season with any greater girth than is pardonable. Many players heretofore have kicked up their heels in the winter season and have enjoyed diversions and refreshments of an intemperate character, knowing they could make it all up on the training trip in the spring. Willard Offers to Comer, Money CHICAGO. Dec. 18. Jess Willard, champion heavy weight pri?e fighter, showed his reaj colors Monday night when he offered .to defend his title against any one who might wish to meet him, the proceeds of the engagement to go to the Red Cross. Willard said he would prefer the match be he!4 sometime next spring so it would be in the open air. He also declared that he would manage his own side of the affair himself in order that no part of the proceeds would be diverted from the purpose for which he planned. The champion will leave for Washington ft once, he said, to confer with officials of the department of justice to learn if there was any way in which It was on December 3, 1902. fifteen years ago, that Kid Carter knocked out Peter Maher in the second round at Philadelphia. The Irish giant had a considerable advantage in height, reach and weight over Carter, who was little, more than a middleweight Mothers

The early weeks before toe season's opening have been dear to the heart of the fan for the grand stories that embellish the sport page at that time. This is the dope that always comes in for a lot of merry joshing, but it pleases the fan just the same and it's certain that he will miss it. . t It has been estimated that with the increased price of railroad fare, berths, hotel bills and so on that it would cost at least $2,500 more to take a team south and provide for it . next spring than it has before. There seems to be no hope of making this up anywhere and so the .trig south must get the boot,' The, players will be asked to report a week or so bef or the beginning of the season and to report in first rate shape, at that. There will be exhibition games among the big league teams before the season opens. And as there will be many vets in. tlje game next year H looks like they'll have to step some to get the frost out of their old bones. Take on Any to Go to Red Cross moving pictures of the match could be shown legally, the receipts of the pi& tures also being pledged. td the Red Cross. The most logical man for him to meet it would seem would be Fred Fulton. Fulton has just , cleared his way .through, tbe ranks .of rather indifferent heavyweights and should be given a chance. Tex Rickard said of a fight between Willard and Fulton: "I believe Fulton would whip Jess in a long fight Willard would be the winner in a tenround go and possibly in one that extended . over fifteen rounds. From twenty up however, I think Fulton would triumph." but Peter was already on the toboggan. Neither Maher or Carter had the material which today would PUt them in the championship class, but they were not quite good enough for the man who claimed the honors in those days. . - - r.

If those who have been braying about baseball's dismal future have not begun to quiet down a bit they soon will. Every magnate and manager of any importance in the country has come forth with harsh words for such as choose to despair the game's chances for next season. In- fact much more has been heard from the squelchers of the knockers than from the knockers themselves.. A lot of baseball's big bugs have worked themselves into a state of furious indignation over the treachery of various knockers and calamity squealers, but these latter, hays not been able to make the noise the magnates have. And there are those who belteye that the magnates , have managed, to give baseball's uncertain future mare pronv inence than even the knockers did.
