FAMILIES WILL GET PREFERENCE

INDIANAPOLIS. Dec. 17. The nearest approach to a priority order by E?n Woolen, Indiana coat administrator, yet to be Issued, went to the coal operators of the state because of the preterit grave fuel situation. The follow'ng telegram was Bent to the operators. "During next week and until the present grave crisis Is met please do not hesitate In giving rigorous preference to need3 of utilities and domestie consumers." While the telesrsim was In the na ture of a request It was aald to mean Us suggestions should he carried out. It was spnt after a conference of the fuel administrator and representatives of the coal operators. The situation is rabidly approaching a grave condition in this state. Congested traffic has made it impossible to deliver coal. The Ft. Wayne and Northwestern traction company notified Mr. Woollen it would be out of coal by next Wednesday. A number of cities. were said to have a very small supply.

Jewelry Denied to Girls, They Wear Fancy Shoe Laces LONDON. Dec. 17. Girl workers In the danger building at Woolwich arsenal are not allowed to wear jewelry. They have therefore, hit on the idea of wearing colored shoe laces. The Cap Shop girls appearing one morning with bright emerald green ribbons on their shoes much to the envy of other departments. The next morning the whole factory was in the fashion, says Doctor A. K. Foxwell the principal supervisor. Shoes were tied with blue, pink, red, white ribbons; with anything but the Government boot lace of untanned leather. The fashion spread to the office and women clerks paraded the platform during the dinner hour with resplendent shoelaces.

With delivery yesterday of sermons from as many American pulpits, urging membership In the American Red Cross, the Christmas campaign of that organization for ten million new members was formally started. The drive will " continue' until Christmas eve when it s expected that the total membership in the United States will reach fifteen millions at least. - Besides the appeals to congregations in behalf of the Red Cross membership campaign, superintendents and teachers in Sunday, schools urged them to do their mite for the work of relief during the war. Of the 136.000 ministers in- the United States it is expected that th3 big majority made Sunday a Red Cross Sunday in their churches.

The members of the freshman cla6s of the Western College for Women presented their first play of the season Saturday evening in the college chapel Zona Gale's comedy in one act, "The Neighbors.' Miss Mildred Nusbaum, of Richmond, Ind., was a member of the cast, taking the part of "Mis' Diantha Able."
