Worst Wind Storm in Years Hits Texas, Writes Don Warfel

Donald Warfel, formerly a reporter on the Palladium's staff, is now stationed in San Antonio. Tex. Don writes of his trip into camp: . Dear Friends All of you "I am now In the place where dust comes from. It is very dusty here. "We left Ft. Thomas Wednesday afternoon at four o'clock and after a three day's excursion through Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma we sailed into Texas and' San Antonio. : "The first thing that greeted our detatchment upon reaching the camp was : 'Gee! But you fellows were lucky' from every side. And I guess we were, for the night before we arrived the camp was visited Jay the worst wind storm that has hit the state in years. Various rumors and wild tales are floating about here concerning the storm and the dust and sand is still banked in back of the tents like snow. "After taking us for a walk mostly around a circle, for exercise we had supper. It sure tasted good. The cook

had to make It extra so we didn't have much of a variety but we had plenty of potatoes, beef, bread and coffee. "After supper we all lined up and took another walk. This time we got our baggage, which had-been brought from the train on trucks. After getting our baggage we were again lined up and took another walk. At this trip we were given 3 blankets and a cot and were taken to a tent. "The next episode is very, very sad. For eight long hours we huddled under our blankets and tried to keep warm T didn't si n for the first two

but at the end of the second hour I was numb everywhere except my nose and it was running all over the place. I slept, dreaming of polar bears and ice wagons all night and got up this morning to a nice hot breakfast. It was real food even if we did have to sit on the soft side of a rock to eat. ''After breakfast we changed tents and got new blankets and cots, with heat in the tent. "Here's where I got a prize they

put two men of the new detachment in with eight others. I got In a tent with my buddy, a young Virginian, one white man and seven drafted Italians that are here as chauffeurs. "Well, you know they say here that things run along like this for a long time and then eet worse.

"Wlen I get in a permanent outfit : here I'll send my address and then you i

must write. Tell the bunch, hello. "DON." Mrs. Flanagan Dies at Age of Eighty-One Mrs. Patrick Flanagan, 81 years old, died Thursday afternoon at Chicago where she has been living. She was formerly engaged in the dry goods
