OF RIVER CRAFT MENACED BY ICE
Owners of Steamboats Are Trying to Save Them from Gorges.
5VAN9VILLE. Ind., Dec. 13. More than $1,000,000 18 invested' in steamboats, towboata, barges, launches and skiffs that are lodged In the heavy ice between Evansville and Cairo, and this floating property is in danger of being lost or damaged when the heavy ice sow in the river breaks up after a thaw and starts to run out In this city and all along the lower Ohio river owners of steamboats are busy trying to save their property. Many of the gasoline launches and smaller crafts that are tied to the banks of the river have been cut out of the ice and hauled on the shore. In many places men are engaged putting up ice, a thing that has rarely occurred on the Ohio river during the month of December. Boys Skating on the Wabash. The Waba6h river at Orayvtlle, XIL, is frozen over, and many boys are skating there. The Wabash is also frozen over at New Harmony. Several boats are lodged in the lee at both these towns, and will -be in danger when the thaw comes. Few of the local boats were able to get to the winter harbor at the mouth of Green river, nine miles above this city, for the rear son that the ice appeared in the river so suddenly and the steamboat men bad no warning. There are a few
boats in the mouth of Oreen river, and they are safe, as Oreen river, which is fed by Innumerable springs, never freezes over, and the river is said to be one of the safest ice harbors in the United States. The barges of ties, that were valued at more than $26,000, belonging to the Hougland company, which were cut loom from their moorings here late Monday afternoon have lodged against a fand bar below the city, and efforts are being made to save the barges and the tjes. Schools Lack Coal. The schools at Henderson, Ky, twelve miles below here, have been forced to close down for lack of fuel and the gas and electric plants in that city are short of coal. The suspension of navigation on the Ohio river means that no coal can be brought to the local market from the numerous mines along that stream. The gorge on this 6ide of the Louisvfll ft Nashville bridge at Henderson, is the largest that has formed there in many years. Men are patrolling the big brides day and night, but it is

escapes from death.

, THOUGHTS TO THINK . ABOUT Impatience is an impious mood that floors man in his efforts to do good; it brings to naught all hia best thought. ' The character of man controls bis actions and is the pivot of hte power; reputation is right or rank according to the guesses of good or the whims of the . wicked. , Slander slips through the lips ' of man when it would be better to shield and shelter his fellows who have the good name. What is worthless to you may be worth much to another who will hunt you up when you advertise. The readers of the Want Ad columns of The Pal- , ladium are looking today for what you have to sell. When you advertise in the Palladium, you reach 95 per cent, of the houses in Richmond. '
