Homes Opened For 1,000 Army Recruits

NEW YORK, Dec 12. More thi-n 1,000 recruits for the United States army, who arrived at Fort Slocum. near New Rochelle, from various places in the east, yesterday were unable to find accommodations and spent the night as guests of the citizens of that city. When it became known that the town's hotels were overcrowded a publict meeting of citizens was calledat St John's Methodist church and arrangements made whereby private homes, clubs and halls were thrown open. Not a recruit lacked for either food or a good place to slep. Breakfast was served this morning under the auspices of a woman's committee

HALF MILLION DAMAGE

ATTLEBORO, Mass.. Dec. 12. The fire which swept through the business center of this city early today caused damage estimated by the police at approximately $500,000. Four buildings were destroyed and several others damaged. The fire was finally checked by the combined efforts of the local department and apparatus from several other cities.
