RAILROADS MAY BE TAKEN OVER
WASHINGTON, Dec. 7. Railroad
presidents composing the railroad war
board today Informed Chairman Newlands, head of the congressional committee dealing with transportation, probably, that if Congress removed tho legal prohibition which foibids unification of the roads for the war emergency government operations wouid be necessary. Chairman Newlands asked the railroad executives for an estimate of tho monev needed by the roads to equip
them for the emergency and they
promised to prepare it in time for presentation to President Wilson Monday. The President himself began considering the question today in conference with Chairman Hall of the Interstate commerce commission. The railroad men, it is understood, estimated that one billion dollars will
be needed to equip and enlarge their
facilities for handling war traffic in 1918. How it should be raised, however, was not discussed, Senator Newlands said and there is a question whether it would be obtained by a loan from the government or by government guarantee.
Heart and Home Problems
Dear Mrs. Thompson: , (1) We arei two girls fourteen years of age. Are we too young to wear middy sweat
ers?
(2) One of us is a blond and one is brunette. What colors should we wear?
(3) What color goes with green? (4) One of us boards at a house and sleeps with a little girl nine years old. She is very spiteful and in bed she is always pinching and pulling the covers off or trying to annoy in one way or
another. Nothing irill stop her-- she
only laughs. It is
impossible to scold her because she runs and tells her
j mother and her
nother believes her.
Should she be ignored, or how should she be treated? INQUISITIVE READERS. (1) No unless you are young-looking for your age. (2) The blonde will probably look

THINGS WORTH KNOWING Velvet that has been spotted with rain should not be bru3hed dry. Shak the velvet and leave it. The water will evaporate and show no mark unless the velvet was dusty before getting wet. In that case wipe the velvet while still damp with a clean damp oloth. This will remove the dust. Then shake well and leave to dry. Before applying black lead as a polish, make a -pad of old cloth and rub soot from the back of the grate or from the flue on all the greasy parts. The grate will then take the polish with much less labor than usual. In making coffee sprinkle a little salt on your coffee before pouring on boiling water and the flavor will be wonderfully improved. Always see that the pot is warmed before making coffee. When baking potatoes, grease them first with a little butter, and when cooked they will be beautifully brown and crisp, with the glazed appearance that makes them so appetizing. To prevent cheese from getting
mouldy, wrap it in u cloth that has i
dry as possible. Keep in a cool place To prevent insect bites, rub the skin with a little vinegar and water. Scented verbane leaves are said tc have the same effect. When working on silk, keep a piece of sandpaper on the table and rub your hands lightly over it when they stick to the silk. For grit in the eye, apply a drop or two of castor oil; it relieves the irritation. Now that pancakes are the order of the day, those that like maple syrup can make it at home at a tmall cost. Take twelve or fifteen clean corncobs (the red ones are best). Wash and put in kettle with enough water to cover; boll about one hour, then strain the liquor, add sugar and boil like syrup. To Prevent Odor of Sauerkraut When cooking kraut the next time
put enough for several meals into the kettle, then cook it slcwly for an hour or more before adding seasoning. Put the superfluous kraut in pint or quart
cans and next time kraut is to be on the bill of fare just open a can, add the seasoning and heat it. There will be no smell whatever. APPLE FRUIT SALAD Pare and cut into cubes three choice eating apples and over them squeeze the juice from half a lemon. Drain, add half a cupful eacti of boiled, seeded raisins and chopped nut meats and one large cupful of . white celery cut Into dice. Moisten with a boiled or mayonnaise dressing and serve in Individual partions in lettuce cups. Garnish each mound of ' salad with chopped Maraschino cherries. This salad is particularly recommended for informal entertainments. . Dates may be substituted for the raisins, if desired. INDIAN PUDDING Indian pudding is made with five cups scalded milk, one-third cup Indian meal, half cup molasses, one teaspoon salt and one teaspoon ginger.
well Jn different shades of blue, and in pink and green. The brunette
should be able to wear navy, brown, red and different shades of yellow. (3) Almost any shade of yellow, orange or gold is pretty with green. (4) Perhaps the little girl can be bribed to be quiet. It might be that if she had a story read to her a part of it each night she would be more considerate. Never show your annoyance by an irritable tone of voice it only encourages the child to be meaner. Dear Mrs Thompson: We are two girls sixteen and seventeen years of age. (1) Do you think we should keep steady company? (2) How late should we stay up at night? (3) Do you think a girl sixteen

man five years her senior?

Dear Mrs. Thompson: I am at the
age of eighteen and rather nice-look
ing. The boys all seem to like me.
(1) A boy gave me a Christmas
present last year and what would be
a good present to give tms Doy tnis
coming Christmas?
(2) When a boy comes to take you
any place what should you say when you are ready to go? S. D.
(1) The fact that the boy gave you
a Christmas present last year does not
make it necessary for you to give him
one this Christmas. It would be all right, however, to give him a book If
you are very good friends.
(2) Say, "I am ready now. Is it
time to go?'
Dear Mrs. Thompson: Could you
please advise me of a cure for goitre,
as mine is growing larger every day.
WORRIED. You should certainly consult a reliable physician. To do anything yourself would probably injure you.
