CONCORD. N. Car., Dec. 7. Cas- ' ton B. Means, on the stand In hla own defense at his trial on the. charge of murder of Mrs. Maude A. King, continued today to explain his letters which the Etate has presented as evidence of duplicity on his part in dealing with Mrs. King. He explained that passages in his letters and telegrams referring to a party on Chesapeake Bay and "Maude flying the track" had reference to a joke which he and Mrs. Means had with Mrs. King with a certain foreigner in whom she was deeply interested. lie also told of having at Mrs. King's direction employed expensive hand writing experts and lawyers to endeavor to secure the provision of the last will of James C. King, known as the second will. This evidence was presented, council explained, to account for certain expenditures of Mrs. King's money made by Means.
LAYMEN TO GIVE REPORT ON SETTLEMENT DAY PLAN
Fred Schlagle.and Lawrence Cook, laymen who attended the District Setl tlement Day convention at Spiceland, will give a report at Middleboro Methodist church, Sunday morning at 9:30 o'clock and at Boston M. E. church Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock.
All Licensed Auto Drivers Will Enlist LAPORTE, Ind., Dec. 7. This city will be without a licensed chauffeur Monday when every man employed in that capacity will leave for Indianapolis to enlist in the aviation section of the United States army. The decision was reached yesterday when the men left their cars standing in the street, and, holding a meeting, reached the decision to volunteer in a body. At the same time the chauffeurs leave for Indianapolis this city's new battery of artillery will be mustered Into the federal service. It will become part of the 2d Indiana regiment of artillery.
ORDER FERTILIZER NOWI
WASHINGTON, Dec. 7. The railroad war board, in a statement today urges farmers to order immediately the fertilizers they require for spring use. The freight situation, the board says, offers little promise of improvement and by placing their orders early, dealers will be enabled to assemble orders and crowd them into as few cars as possible. Prompt unloading of cars after arrival also is urged.

REVENUE STAMPS HERE
The Richmond postoffice has received 28,000 revenue stamps in valuation from one to fifty cents. They will "be placed on all legal documents, bonds, etc.
Three Russian famines of comparatively recent date were among the most severe in the history of the country. They occurred in 1S91, 1906 and 1011.
WASHINGTON, Dec. 7. Reports of standing committees and adresses by missionaries to the Orient today engrossed the delegates to the annual convention of the National Woman's Christian Temperance Union.
TO SLEEP ON ARMY COT
WRIGHTSTOWN, N. J., Dec. 7. John D. Rockefeller, Jr., will work as a Young Men's Christian Association field secretary at the Camp Dix national army cantonment here for two weeks, the war work council announced today. He will begin his duties tomorrow and will sleep on an army cot in an 8 by 10 feet pine board room and will mess with the soldiers.
COURSES TO FALL INTO FOUR CLASSES Night schools Principal Carman announced Friday the courses for the new term, which begins Wednesday, Jan. 9, have been divided into four divisions: Industrial, household, commercial and general. Industrial work will consist of machine shop work, sheet metal drafting, molding, pattern making, carpentry, cabinet making, printing, plumbing, automobile study and engineering. Households, practical nursing, cooking, dress-making, millinery, household physics and spinning. Commercial, typewriting, stenography, bookkeeping, penma:Ip, commercial arithmetic, accountancy, office procedure and salesmanship. " General courses, Spanish, French, gymnasium, English, writing and arithmetic, telegraphy, physics and chemistry, commercial art and life drawing.
FEW CLAIM EXEMPTION
SAN JUAN, Dec. 7. Incomplete reports from the examining boards throughout the island indicate that a high percentage of the men called for war service are physically fit. There are few claims for exemption. After three days' examinations in San Juan approximately forty percent of those called have passed the physical tests.
FEELING AGAINST BRITISH GROWING
LONDON, Dec. 7. The Petrograd correspondent of the Times says there is only too good reason to corroborate the statement of Leon Trotzky, the
Bolshevik! foreign minister, regarding the existence of a feeling of resentment against British residents in Russia. The feeling, he adds, is nowise universal, but Is growing dally among
the Bolshevlki. British workmen In a Petrograd factory lately were warned by their Russian comrades that they had better leave the country aa trouble may be brewing.
