SPORT SNAP SHOTS On November 19, 1S94, twenty-three years ago, Owen Zeigler and Jack McAuliffe fought a three-round draw at Coney Island. This was the last bout in which McAuliffe engaged, except for the friendly four-round exhibition with George Lavigne at Madison Square Garden in 1896, when Jack formally retired from the. ring and banded over the lightweight title to the Saginaw Kid. McAuliffe was then going back, at his exhibition with Zeigler proved he was more interested in the race track than in the ring, but he had sense enough to quit when the quitting was good. Zeigler, McAuliffe's lasi opponent, was a native of Pennsyl vania, and became amateur light weight champion of America in 1891 after which he became a professional In 1894 he defeated Stanton Abbott the British' champion, and the next year he again whipped Abbott in twenty rounds at Baltimore and fought a twenty-five round draw with Jack Everhardt at New Orleans. He defeated many good men, and fought a draw with Lavigne, but never reached the championship. George Foster Sanford. coach of Rutgers college, is the new Miracle Man of football. Sanford scored a great personal triumph a short while ago when the Rutgers college team easily defeated "Cupid" Black's New port naval reserve eleven, which "hac1 been considered one of the strongest on the gridiron. The Rutgers kickers von because they played high clasr football and depended almost entirely on team work. Few tactical mistakes were charged against them. Sanford's coaching was largely responsible for their well earned victory- It wasn't strange, therefore, that Sanford was overwhelmed with congratulations when his pupils ran off the gridiron at Ebbets field. Rutgers has attained a prominent position in the football world, and much of the credit belongs to the former Yale man, who always has been one of the leading gridiron mentors. These Two Richmond Boys Courted Recruiting Officer
Listen, ye slackers,, to this tale of two Richmond boys, pals for years and both in their teens, who courted rather than shunned the recruiting officer. It would not be ethical to mention the names of these lads, but they are soni of well known business men of the city. Each boy is an almost perfect specimen of young manhood -and each one has been desperately determined to get into the big fuss "over there"; but one boy has a blind eye and the other suffered from, a slight defect. In vain each boy sought enlistment in the army. Finally one was operated upon and his services were accepted. The boy with the blind eye was almost heart-broken and he called his pal . a "lucky stiff." But Jack, the one with the blind eye, decided to resort to camouflage. This Time In Capital. Agam visiting a recruiting office, this time in Indianapolis, he sat in the examination room until he memorized all the letters on the several printed rows of the eye-test chart. When he received his eye test he glibly and correctly called off all the letters. "Accepted," said the sergeant, and Jack dance dfor joy. He was sent to a recruit depot and there received another test. A new eye-test chart was sprung upon him and he failed to meet the requirements. "Discharged" said the officer, and Jack, shedding real tears, returned to Richmond. Later he went to another neighborMRS. HENDERSON KILLED SOUTH BEND, Nov. 20. Mrs. Helen Studebaker Henderson, daughter of the late Jacob F. Studebaker. one of the founders of the Studebaker corporation, and wife of Lucius Henderson, a wealthy resident of New Rochelle, N.
