FARMERS WILL UNITE WITH LABORJNIONS Down With Profiteers Says President of the Farmer's League.

BUFFALO. 1ST. Y., Nov. 18 A pledge

from the farmer to Join hands with union labor to help win the war was

given at today'a session of the American Federation of Labor by A. C.

Townley. president of the Fanners' Nonpartisan league and L. V. Strayer, second vice president of the National

Farmers congress.

"The farmers realize," Mr. Strayer said, "the great responsibility that

rests upon them in this great world

crisis. When the liberties for which our forefathers fought are in danger it is important for we workers in the cities and in the fields to understand one another. The fallacy that we are opposed to you and you to us should

be corrected.

President Townley urged the federation to co-operate In putting field and factory war products on the market at

lower prices and in greater quantities.

"Let the two great classes of pro

ducers join hands behind the government in this war." be said. "Let us put down the profiteer. We would find in a surprisingly short time that our people at home will be better and more economically fed. our forces at

. the front better and more economically equipped." In regard to the political aspect Mr. Townley said: "Remember that this would be no mean coalition. The farmers of this country represent 37 percent, labor 25 percent of the nation's voting strengtht."

Lieutenant General von Ardenne of the Berliner Tageblatt who reports this conversation with von Bichthofen at the Flanders front, adds that the German air service, which evidently has been forewarned by newspaper discussion of American planes, Is steadily Increasing the number of aviators and machines. von Ardenne says, now earry wireless receiving outfits whleh enable them to engage in combat promptly with

enemy fliers. This is necessitated by new conditions on the Flanders front where whole squadrons of allied machines can appear over the German lines in a surprisingly" short time. German squadrons starting from the ground to meet the invaders would be too late, so they must constantly be in the front lines either flying or ready for flight.

COPENHAGEN, Nov. 16 A dispatch to the Politikan from Haparanda reports jthat according o latest advices barricade fighting is taking place in Petrograd. Communication with Petrograd has again been restored but no direct news has been received from the Russian capital. The Bolshevik! are still in control in Petrograd while Premier Keren-

sky's troops are reported to be in 1

flight and again to be marching on the Bolshevik! stronghold. Efforta of the socialists to arrange a settlement with the Bolsheviki and to bring about a new coalition government have failed. Other reports say that the Maximalist leaders, Lenine and Trotzky, are losing their popularity. LONDON, Nov. 16. According to official circles the latest news from Russia here is a message from the British minister dated Petrograd Tuesday via Haparanda, and received last evening. It reported "All well here." Another message from Haparanda reports a certain amount of guerilla warfare in Petrograd and declares that the city is in control of the Bolshevik!, hose soldiers were without officers. The telegraph and , telephone offices have been wrecked.

NEW YORK. TCov. 16. Police Inspectors In making their new census of alien enemies along New York's waterfront have discovered. It was learned today, that a much larger number of aliens than generally supposed are holding responsible positions in the barred zone. One official Is quoted as saying that a "startling state of affairs" has been revealed. Numerous flagrant violations of barred zone regulations have been discovered, it was said. Police Commissioner Woods was expected to act upon the reports of his inspectors during the day.

400,000 FLEE FROM GERMANS

ROME, Wednesday, Nov. 14 Four hundred thousand refugees from the zone of the present military operations have reached the central and southern provinces. Iajor Grayson M. P. Murphy, head of the American Red Cross commission in Europe, is taking measures to contribute to their relief. He has sent agents to Bologna and Ancona, through which most of the refugees pass. Their principal requirements are woolen clothes, blankets and shoes which can not be obtained in some districts. Prince Polanna. Mayor of Rome, today welcomed the representatives of the American Red Cross and expressed his appreciation of their work. For economic and political reasons the government has decided that the refugees will be received elsewhere than at Rome. PROVIDE FOR FOOD

STOCKHOLM, Nov. 16. The revolutionary committee in Petrograd, ac cording tfi a dispatch from Haparanda, has taken measures for levictualing the Russian capital. Arrangements have been made for Increasing the stocks of wheat and workmen have been ordered to continue their work without interruption. The recent order for 7,000,000 pairs of army shoes at $4.65 a pair Is the largest order for.shoes ever placed by the government, and the bill will total tr.ore than $32,500,000.
