HIGH SCHOOL QUINTET IS READY FOR OPENING CONTEST OF THE SEASON WITH WINCHESTER

HI

Coach Mullins' Men Are Well Drilled for Contest at Coliseum Tonight Game Will Be Called at 8 O'clock.

They're off! . The Richmond High school basketball season opens tonight,

Friday night, at the Coliseum, with Winchester High school. For the last month, Coach Mullins, of R. H. S. has been drilling his men steadily and the squad is now ready to start on a schedule, that, although it is much harder than the schedule of last year, will bring added glory to the school if the team is victorious.

Manager Nohr has placed on the

Richmond list the strongest teams In the state, end the prowess of tbs Richmond five will be determined long before they enter the state and district tournaments next spring. Although not' usually classed as a first rate, team, Winchester's performance against Ft. Wayne last week puts It in a position to claim respect from the Richmond fans, and the game Friday night promises to be closely contested. Winchester Team Heavy. Winchester's team Is made up of men that are much heavier than most of the players on the R. H.6, squad and the results of Friday night's contest will depend largely on the speed shown by the two teams, Bt R. H.S. may well stand for Richmond's High Speed team as well as High school, for the squad has shown unusual speed in practice and their lack of weight will be made up by their fast playing on the floor and accurate basket throwing. At center in the opening game, Shel Simmons, captain of the team, is the enly man eligible. Simmons, however, is well able to hold down the position. He Is an accurate basket thrower, and although he lacks the ability for defensive play shown by Parker last year, the plays of the team have been so arranged that Simmons will be able to play to the best advantage to the team. Varsity Squad Announced. VanAllen and Robinson, with a chance for Stegman and Gardner, have been named by Coach Mullins as the men that will probably start the game at forward. Both of these men are

light, but their throwing is accurate and their floor work fast. Stegman and Gardner may be placed in at the first of the game In order to wear down the stamina of the Winchester men before the real point getters of the squad are sent in. Shelton and Cramer, with Harding as substitute will defend the R. H. S. basket Shelton is the only regular varsity man from last season that is with this year's squad and is considered one of the best back guards in the state. Cramer 13 making his first appearanco as a member of a Richmond team, but he hae the weight and speed to make a valuable floor guard. Harding was kept off the regular five on account of missing several workouts with the squad, but he is a valuable reserve man. He has both weight and speed, and a desire to "get rough" Ehould the occasion arise. The game will be called promptly at S o'clock and there will be no reserved seats.

MILWAUKEE, Wis., Not. 3. Since Richie Mitchell was handed a kl o. by Bennie Leonard some while back he has made not the" slightest stir in the fight game. And now his youn? brother, "Pinkey" Mitchell, seems ready to take his place. "Pinkey' says that there's going to be a fight title in the family after all. Richie Mitchell was a fctar of the lightweight class, mentioned by many as the American ligiitweight champ, till the Leonard disaster, and "Pinkey" shows promise of being as clever as the older brother. The younger Mitchell has recently started his professional career after making a brilliant record in the amateurs. "Pinkey" Mitchell is exceptioally thin at prpsent and when he begins to put on weight he should be a real contender In the lightweight class. He is tall and rangy with a good left hand and is a hard hitter. That young Mitchell is well thought of hereabouts is certain since tie is soon to be rratched with Red. Dolan or some of the other better known lesser lights and he is expected to rise as rapidly as did his brother.

It Is an unfortunate truth that there are some of the golfing clan who require alcoholic stimulus to their game. A story is told of one who was playing a round recently equipped with a pint flask. At the rate of a sip a hole, the fire water was about gone when he propelled one from the eighth tee, a 145 yard hole. As the player neared the green in an unsteady fashion, his caddie rushed up to him. "I've found the ball; I've found it," excitedly exclaimed the boy. "Say, just c'm have a look at it." He led the golfer to the hole, pointed into the cup and exclaimed; "There it is right In the hole!" Leaning over, rather unsteadily, the player 6aw through a slighUy blurred vision, the shining white ball. "Thash right, m'boy; y're right he mumbled. "She's in the hole. Now, whatcha know about that for luck? Gimme my niblick." ; Having lost out with Champion Jess ! Willard, Tom Jones has taken another I boxer under his management The Uatter is Sailor Friedman, a Chicago lightweight, whom Jones expecta to develop into another champion. Jones has had remarkable success with the men he has handled, three of them winning titles while under 'his wing. Heruided Billy Papke into the middlem eight throne, Ad Wolgast into the lightweight seat of honor and helped place the crown on Jess Willard's bead. Ring followers are not sure whether luck or ability accounts for Jone's remarkable success in picking winners. . Just five year ago John T. Richards, a Wisconsin man. was trying his level best to make Ohio State University a winner on the gridiron. Despite the fact that .State was beaten three times that season, Richards was given credit for putting the Columbus school in the limelight. It was the first season that State blossomed forth into a bigtime performer. State that year tore away from the Ohio circuit and travelt fti li?!rh dpfp.itimr Otterbein. 55-0:

39-6. State lost to Michigan,' 14-0; Penn State, 37-0, and M. A. C, 35-20. Then Richards quit to take up recreation work In Chicago. That was five years ago. Today Richards is back In the coachirg business and the scene of his Fctivities is Wisconsin University, Madison, .Wis. Richards is grooming the Badgers for their game with Ohio State, which takes place soon at Madison. John has visions of downing State and thus annexing the "Big Ten" championship. State didn't lost last fall and has a clean slate so far this season. The limelight was turned on Richards when his team whipped Minnesota, 10-7, recently. It was the first victory Wisconsin scored over the Gophers in five seasons. Colonel Ebbets says that Otto Krueger will be the Brooklyns star catcher next year. He adds that Krueger never had a chance to prove his worth until he joined the Robins last summer. Krueger was tried and released by the Yankees two years ago. The Giants picked him np and he caught well in a few games last spring, but as "McGraw had McCarty, Rarlflen and Gibson in harness Krueger had togo. Krueger caught Marquard, Cheney, Pfeffer and the other Brooklyn pitchers in splendid style. He also hit the ball hard and threw to bases finely. His engagement by Colonel Ebbets forced Chief Meyers off the team and made Otto Miller look to his laurels. Miller Hugglns Is quoted as saying that he will engage a veteran coach to handle the Yankees pitchers next year. It is said that Huggins may secure faddy Livingston, once a well know catcher, who managed the Milwaukee team this season. Livingston coached the Cardinals' pitchers last year, and got excellent results. If Huggins signs him Duke Farrell, who served as coach nnd scout under Eiil Donovan, wiil probably be turned loose from the-Yankee payroll. Huggins also is' expected to supplant Jimmy Dugan with a new trainer.
