CONDUCTOR OF ORCHESTRA HIT IN BALTIMORE

BALTIMORE, Nov. 7. Former Gov. Warfield denounced Dr. Karl Muck to a big assemblage at a patriotic meetIn s at the Lyric theater this afternoon. It was In this hall that the Boston Symphony orchestra concert was to be held tomorrow night. In the course of his address Gov. Warfield read a letter from Cardinal Gibbons, in which he .said: "I regret that I cannot attend the meeting arranged In honor of the 'Star Spangled Banner,' but shall be . with you In spirit and approve with all my heart of the efforts being put forth to surround the sacred emblem of our country with all the respect which It

should command. "As with the ark of the old covenant, he who touches it with profane hands shall suffer. ,N Hopes Key Haunts Director. Capt. Hughes, representing Gen. Kuhn and Gen. Nicholson at Camp Meade, said he was there to voice the protests of his generate of the army here and the army over there, tie concluded: "Muck's reference to the 'Star Spangled Banner was sufficient to make Francis Scott Key turn over in his grave, and I hope that Key will arise in his grave and haunt Muck." Deafening applause greeted the remarks. RAeolutions were adopted denouncing Dr. Muck for having refused to play the national anthem. "We. consider he has publicly insulted every patriotic citizen, and especially every citizen of Maryland, the state In which the national anthem had its birth." they say. Encore for Dr. Muck. WASHINGTON, Nov. 7. -After he bad led the Boston Symphony orchestra in the "Star Spangled Banner." Dr. Muck, the German director, was encored this afternoon by an audience that filled every available space In the National theater. The encore was given, at the close of the program, the audience refusing to leave until Dr. Muck returned to the stage and bowed.
