Eighty-eight persons, thirty of them children, were killed on the streets and highways of New York City and State last month by automobiles, according to the National Highways Protective society's report Issued here today. 1 In thi3 city 42 persons met death by automobiles, five by surface cars and 3 by wagons as compared with 39 by automobile, . four by surface cars and eleven by wagons In October, 1916. In New York outside the city 46 met death by automobile, 4 by surface cars and 2 by wagon as compared with 35 by automobile 2 by trolley and one by wagon during the same period of last year. During the last month twenty-six persons were killed by automobiles, two by trolleys and one by wagon In New Jersey. Twelve were killed at highway grade crossings in New York state and five In New Jersey during October.

BETHEL, IND.

CHICAGO, Nov. 2. Three petty officers and five civilians are under arrest today in connection wllh charges of the theft of more than $25,000 worth of foodstuffs from the Great Lakes naval training station at Lake Bluff, thirty miles north of here. Those under arrest are: H. L. Korner, petty ofTlcer In charge of the commissary, George Gowen and C. C. Molnari, petty officers assistants to Kor ner; Edward and Willian Koos, sausage manufacturers at Kenosha, Wis.; Anton Dudek, who had a contract for the garbage at the naval station; Gustavo Gehl, an alleged "fence," and Phillip Levandowski, at whose farm much of the stolen property is said to have been stored. The alleged conspiracy is eald to have been disclosed to the federal authorities by the manager at Kenosha for a packing house, who said he was told by customers that his products could be obtained at prices below those charged by him.
