The rumor of $10 hogs by the first of the year has been effectively squashed by a sweeping denial direct from Food Administrator Hoover. Not only does Mr. Hoover deny any such intention of the food administration, but he emphasizes the idea that when hog prices are finally placed on a basis of a certain relationship with corn prices, the advantage to liva stock producers will be so much better than at present that the feeding of corn to hogs and cattle will be much the best market available for this crop. Just how the "$10 hog rumor" got started is hard to say. A certain Chicago daily, patching together rumors that the hog market was to be established by fixing a relationship between corn and hog prices and that Prof. E. Dana Durand of the university of Minnesota was at the Chicago stock yards to work out this relationship, ran a story that started the idea. The inspired "head writer," went the reporter's story one better and gave the world the startling information that $10 hogs were coming," or words to that effect at the top of the page. Following this newspaper drop in the hog market of close to 50 percent came the annual convention of the packers here, and the usual declaration of 'Pat" Cudahy of Milwaukee that hogs are too high. By the time these two stories were well circulated through the country districts it became necessary for Mr. Hoover to make a statement to clear the air and down the rumors. Mr. Hoover's telegram to Mr. Wheeler follows: "The statement has appeared in Chicago papers that we have the Intention of reducing hog prices to $10. Chicago advices are absolutely untrue and do not represent the opinion or the proposed action of the food administration, which will take to steps to jeopardize the interests of the live stock producers. All our pow. ers will be. used to keep prices at which allied and governmental purchases are made on a plane that gives assured return of cost and profit to producers of meat animals. In our opinion, the best market obtainable for the present corn crop of the country will be through live stock. We need increased production of beef and pork.
