EARLHAM SHOWS IMPROVEMENT IN ITS FOOTBALL
Quakers Have Equalled Last Years' Record and Expect Even Break' on Season. With five more games on the schedule, the Earlham college football team promises to make a better showing this season than they have for several seasons past. With a practically green squad, Coach Walter O. Lewis started the season on September 24, and in the short time that he has had to drill the team has made a showing that is already an improvement over that made last year when no less than six letter men were on the team, and the squad was much larger than this year. Aside from the game against Miami, In which the Quakers were completely out of their class, the record of the school is fairly good. Three games have been played so far this season, counting the affair at Miami as a game, and of this number the Quakers have won one and lost two. Last year In the first three games, the team lost two and tied the other. One game was won in the entire 1916 season, this being the final game cf the seaton against Wilmington college. Two of the others were tied and six were lost. This year the schedule has only eight games, and of this number, one has already been won, with games remaining on the schedule with Hanover, Wilmington and Wittenberg, In which the Quakers have more than an even chance "to win. and with De
Coach Stiehm Will Use New Formations Against Ohio State BLOOMINGTON. Ind., Oct. 26.-The Indiana varsity spent all its time today in scrimmaging the freshmen on offensive plays which Coach Stiehm has concocted especially for Ohio State. The Columbus crew has had one or two scouts at every game the Hooslers have played, so Stiehm's tactics for the Ohio game have been particularly adapted. The team is now at work on an entirely new set of formations. During workout today Stiehm said in his criticism that his men were not putting enough drive in their at. tacks. Two or three players showed themselves unfamiliar with some signals. Yearlings will take Buckeye formations tomorrow and put the varsity on defensive.
Pauw and Butler, against whom the Quakers are not expected to make much of a showing. Team Loses By Accidents. ' Accidents have damaged the Quaker machine somewhat in the last two weeks,, but only one man has been permanently disabled so far and Coach Lewis now has two men working to fill the position. The team has also done well with a handicap of a short squad. Except for three night after the opening of the eason, the squad has never been able to show two full elevens, and all of the scrimmage has been with one short team. Three of the remaining five games are to be played on Re'.d field, and this adds to the chances of the Quakers for an 6Ven brbeak on the season. The first game of the season on Reid field has been scheduled for Saturday afternoon. The game will be called at 2:30 o'clock. - -

It appears that Bennio Leonard Is not a lieutenant in the army nor is he in any real sense in the army at all. The pictures published of Leonard in uniform have been regarded on many sides as proof that the lightweight champ had been given a commission and would abandon all his boxing for the duration of the war. But the suit he wore was merely the unofficial uniform given newspaper correspondents or any other civilians" who are associated with the army, but not in it Leonard's salary as a boxing instructor is the same as a Lieutenant's but beyond that there is no resemblance. Leonard and his manager are to be blamed for permitting the Impression to go forth that he had enlisted if they did not actually spread it Leonard's statement at the time he won the lightweight crown that he was going to join the army immediately, has kept him In hot water ever since. Now that he has made a half-hearted stall to join he will come in for more sneers than ever before The National league Is said to be greatly humiliated over the Giants' failure to win the big series, the chief worry being thai it has been outclassed for all time. The Giants certainly were way out in front of any other talent In the older league and the White Sox were able to win their pennant only after some warm battl
ing. This seems to argue quite convincingly that the American league has the National league beat to pieces. So the National league fans are sobbing. What's more the American league has won by far the biggest percentage of world's series in the past However, a short serie3 doesn't always prove everything and it is likely to be son? while before the American league Is so far ahead of the National that It will disdain to meet the older league in a big contest Australia is subscribing a fund to build a monument in commemoration of the boxers who have lost their lives in the war. The project is being forwarded by the various boxing clubs throughout the country. A rabid New York baseball fan paid S15 for the ball that Benny Kauff first laid on for a homer. The fan w ho caught the ball sat somewhere behind the first fan who had grabbed but misssd and th9 latter was so eag
er to own the ball that he went down into his Jeans and paid the fifteen beans. The Carlisle Indians are scheduled to play both the Army and Navy foot ball teams this season. It's the first time in the history of football that the Indians have met the soldiers or sailors. Prospects of professional hockey in Canada this winter are reported to be few owing of course to the war. Canada will miss its national pastime, but Quebec is unable to organize a worthy team this season and it looks as though the National Hockey association would have to close up for the duration of the war. There had been plans for a four-club league, but with Quebec out the chances are too few. Women of New York are trying to organize a golf club for women only. This is not to be further from masculine curses as might appear at first glance, but mostly because the golf clubs generally confine women's play to the first of the week and give the links over to the men on Saturdays and Sundays. Honolulu has organized , a major league circuit, composed "of three teams Japanese, Chinese and Pirates. A mercantile league may be formed to play preliminary games.

BENNY LEONARD SETS NEW MARK
CLEVELAND, O., Oct. 26. When Benny Leonard knocked out Toughey Ramser of Lorain in the seventh round of a scheduled ten-round bout here last night he completed a record never before equaled by a lightweight champion in ring history. His victory was the fourth within six days. Here's record: Oct 19 Outpointed Jack Britton, welterweight in ten rounds at New York. Oct 22 Made Eddie Wagond look foolish in a bout at Philadelphia. Oct 23 Overwhelmingly defeated Young Erne at Buffalo. Oct 24. Knocked out Toughey Ramser in seven rounds at Cleveland. Ramser had no chance with the champion, but he was game. Benny floored his opponent three times within sixty seconds in the seventh before Ramser took the count.
Earlham is Ready for Game Against Hanover Saturday Leaks in the Quaker line that proved so costly in the Quaker defense in
former games have been stopped, up !
the game against Hanover on Reid field next Saturday and in spite of the fact that Brown, one of the varsity back field w-ill not be ' able to play, the attack of the Quakers promises to be more effective. The squad has been drilled steadily this week on tackling and the entire method of defense for the team has been changed Only a light workout will be given the men In Friday's session, and the team will be given a good rest for the game Saturday. Brown's injury in the game against Miami had sufficiently healed to allow him in the Hanover game, but in Wednesday's scrimmage he was again forced out with a sprained ankle. The probable line-up for Saturday's game follows: Bookout, left end. ,
Calvert, Capt. left tackle. Hadley, left guard, Osborne, center. Johnson, right guard. , Gordon, right tackle. Mills, right end, Snyder, quarterback. Jessup, left half. Hoerner, right half. Titsworth, full back-
