Sam Lanstord. probably the; besti of all the negro fighters, net bia finish - a fair months ago at Boston, where the lanky Fred Fulton made him quit in a few round. It was the first time the Boston terror, was stopped ainee he was a norlce and there is no doubt that be is through as a star. , Langtord was at his best about the time he fought Stanley Ketchel in Philadelphia seven or eight years ago. Even then many critics thought they could observe signs of retrogression in the back terror. In those days Sam's stomach was inconspicuous and the upper portion of hi torso spread out like an open fan. He looked more like an exaggerated car icature of a fighter than a real thing and the mere sight of his tremendous shoulders, short, thick neck and long, heavily muscled arms, never failed to strike terror into the heart of bis op ponent In the opposite corner. In those days Sam was not only a terrific hitter, but he was an exceptionally clever boxer as well. But as his waist line began to bulge, bis speed left him and with it most of his skill. During the last few years of his career it was marvellous that he was able to fight at all, he had grown so fat. Most of the excess flesh accumulated around his stom ach, while his legs remained as thin as ever, so that they fairly quivered under the strain of supporting his body. However, bis ability was the last thing to leave him and because of it he vm dangerous, to the last. A pitching record that escaped general notice owing to the world's series of the Braves In the last few days of the National league championship campaign. Near went through a stretch of forty Innings without allowing his opponent to core a run. After the New York Giants had faded to score on him in the final Inning of the laet game he pitched ' against them, he held St Iiouls fourteen innings without a run, than Pittsburg and Cincinnati for nine each. His next out was against Brooklyn on October 4. when he went seven innings before the Dodgers put ever a run on him. This was one of r Set 'Em Up OnThe Other Alley CITY LEAGUE 8TANDING

Although Art King rolled far below his usual standard, the other members of the Coca-Colas managed to pull through the series with the Models with two victories to one defeat, in the City league games on the Twlgg alleys Wednesday night In spite1 of his' lowered average, King lacked two pins of taking the average honors of the game. Iserman took high average and Wood high score. , One pin pulled the All Stars out of the rut in their series- with the K. of C. and with the score In the final game 795-796, the All Stars took two games of the series. Mercurio took average honors with 182 for three games and Seymore rolled high score with 218. The Tramps retained a strangle hold on the cellar position of the league in , Wednesday's series by dropping two to the Vogues. Meyers of the Tramps was the Individual star, getting high average with 186 for three games and 210 for high score. The scores: Cooa-Colaa.

the longest stretches of runless pitch
ing shown by a major league boxman in many years., To the older fan it doesn't seem so long since the White Sox piayea mac i world's series with the Cubs in 1906. j yet there are only four members of the world's champions or that year who are now to be seen In major league ball and they cannot be said to be very active or prominent. Fielder Jones is the manager of the near tallend Browns; Nick Altrock is drawing pay form the Washington club for coaching. Ed Walsh tried a come back the past season with the Boston Braves, without much success; George Davis acted as coach for Fielder Jones' team during the past season. Oh, yes, some of the rest are in the minors and still big toads in small puddles. If s the fellow who goes to bis man that takes in pugilism.- So aver matchmakers- Officials of scrap clubs charged with the task of selecting ac tors unite in 2e contention. They scowl at the slow measuring pug who likes to stand off and box, shoot a left once In a while, cross his right maybe, then back away and pose. There may have been a time when the latter pleased. A scientific era held sway. Premium was put on defense and self-control. BattlerB ofttimes used up three or more rounds in the so-called "feeling out." The aim was to ascertain by observation and tests the exact stock in trade possessed by the foe. Patrons admired this type of tusseling. Times more. The head down, bore-in fellow who slings a storm of slams regardless of where they alight, is the youth to get engagements, and, Incidentally, supporters. "Buried his man under, a shower of swats." So says a sentence in an account of a recent battle at Philly. In that old Quaker burg they know fighting, want it, won't stand for any sob stuff. It must be popper hot, otherwise the club or shouters deny a return of the young men. The youth capable of delivering a barrage of blows will land another show any old time he seeks the same. Big Leagues Will Play 140 Games in Next Season s Race ST. LOUIS, Mo., Oct. 25. President Johnson of the American league today announced that next season the league schedule would be cut from 154 to 140 games. He said the season would begin about April 27 or May 1 and end the middle if September. "I have always thought 154 games were too many," said Johnson. "Each year I have contended 140 games made the ideal schedule, but as sentiment among the magnates did not seem to favor my idea, I never pressed the point The shortening next season is in no .wise a war move, al though I think the war provides a good reason for inaugurating the plan. Details Up at Meeting "Of course, details will have to be worked out at the annual league meeting in Chicago. I do' not think the shortening of the schedule will entail a reduction of the player limit "The new schedule or 140 games will enable the teams to get a later start to training camps, and this also will be a big factor, as it frequently has been too cold in the south to do much training when the teams arrive in February." August Herrmann, chairman of the national commission and president of the Cincinnati Nationals, in a letter to a St. Louis newsparer said he favored a 140 game schedule. The local ex emptlon board today reaffirmed a decision by which it refused to exempt wiaaen cyganiewicz, known as Zbyszko, the wrestler, from the selective draft. Zbyszko, who is now at Camp Devens, Ayer, Mass., claimed exemption on the ground that his mother and sister in Austria, were dependent upon him. After the local board had denied the claim a month ago, Zbyszko appealed to the state board and to President Wilson. The president returned the case to the local board. the soldiers there.
