QUAKERS LOSE HARD RATTLE TO FRANKLIN
With Gordon Out of Game, Earlham Men Are Unable to Withstand Baptists. With a -weakened line, and a crippled backfleld, Earlham lost Its second game to Franklin, at Franklin last Sat urday, 20 to 14. The absence of Gordon, the big tackle, who wa3 held out of the game on acocunt of an operation, left a big gap in the Quaker line, and to this gap the Baptists made most of their plays. Although Snyder, the speedy Quaker, and Tobe Jessup ,at half, were out of the practice sessions for the greater part of last week through Injuries received in the game at Cincinnati, both men played brilliantly throughout the entire game, Jessup being one of the chief ground gainers for the Quakers Earlham's passing and kicking was also used to advantage, more than a hundred yards being gained by this method of play. Franklin started the scoring in the second period, with a brilliant run of fifty yards from an in tercepted forward pass to touchdown fcy Prultt and a kicked goal by Ross. In the third Franklin scored again, this time taking advantage of the weakened Quaker line and going through for a touchdown with a series of plunges. The Quakers started In this half with a touchdown on line plunges, in which the entire Quaker backfield plunged through the Baptist line for half the length of the field, Snyder carrying the ball under the Franklin goal. Calvert kicked goal. Ragsdale scored for Franklin in the final period and Brown, Quaker right half, scored the final touchdown for Earlham on a fake forward yass that went through without a hitch. Calvert closed the scoring of the game by kickink goal, making the final score, 20 to 14. The Quakers outplayed the Franklin warriors In field play, but the Earlham line was unable to withstand Franlin's attack without the aid of Gordon and two of the Baptists' touch' downs were the result of this weakress. Gordon will be able to get back in the game against Miami at Oxford next Saturday. The line-up and summary: Earlham (14) Franklin (20) Bookout . . . . Pruitt Left End E. Pitts Roberta Left Tackle L. WEAVER Sw-MTEi LT Burns safe at second stealing in Strong est Team in State to Play Against Anderson ANDERSON, Ind., Oct 15. With the best schedule that an Anderson aigh echool ever faced, the. prospects for a winning five this year are bright. Three of lust year's 8rst team men are in school and four more of last year's letter men are back, making a practically old team for Coach A. R. Staggs to bulid up. Several players, however, are giving last year's crew a Ight for their places and it is probable that two men who were not even on the squad last year make the first team or its subs. Manager C. C. Rhodes secured two more dates for the schedule, one October 10, adding Newcastle to the already strong list of teams. Nine of the strongest fives in the state are on the schedule and the high school thinks that the team will get underway fast from the big games that come at the first of the season, including the game against Richmond to be played here on November 16. While Coach Staggs has not issued any definite statement to the press, he has said to use your eyes and he will stick by the papers. In a recent article the story ran: "Miller and Cannon will probably be the choices for forwards, Rowley center and Trueblood and Wertz or Wolski, guards. The only place where any hesitation is In the guards as Wolski and Wertz are the same size with the shade in favor of Wertz." With the Allies now in possession of practically the entire ridge dominating the plain of Belgium, the Germans have started a terrific drive at the other end of the battle line in France. It is surmised by military experts that the Crown Prince's new attack at Verdun is based on fear of a decisive victory for the Allies iv. Flanders. Haig's troops are only eight miles from Roulers and ten from Menim, the main objectives of his recent offensives.

the first inning of the opening game of CAMOUFLAGE ABOUT THE WORLD SERIES Somebody had something up their sleeve or why the coin tosa last Saturday? Russell begged for a chance, took a chance but that was all. He How much would you be willing to lay on the Sox after that fourth inning? Thirty-two years ago, when scores were supposed to have been small if they ran under 20, Chicago defeated New York, 7 to 4. It must have been a whale of a game. Weaver made three errors Saturday and got one hit in four chances. I Weaver is a shortstop. Risberg had but one - chance, and he used that chance beautifully. Risberg is a shortstop, but acted as a pinch hitter. Jack Doyle, one of the leading authorities of the country on baseball, has figured that the odds on the series are 5 to 2 on the Sox, despite the fact tl.at the seventh game will be played in New York. Any Sox fans want to bet that way? The game starts at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at New York and at 1 o'clock at the Palladium score board. FOOTBALL RESULTS Indiana Purdue, 7; DePauw, 6. the World's Series at Chicago. Robertson Blamed for Giants' Defeat NEW YORK. Oct. 15. The Giants, who arrived home this afternoon, do not blame Manager McGraw for his failure to take Slim Sallee out of the fifth game In the seventh inning. They were unanimous in declaring that Sallee had all his "stuff" intact, and with any kind of a break would have weathered the storm. They were rather Inclined to censure Davey Robertson for his failure to capture Chick Grandi's long fly in the seventh. Had this ball been caught, and the players all agree Robertson should have caught it, the American leaguers would have been retired without a run in this inning and the entire course of the game from that period on would have been materially altered.

WILL SPLIT UP $152,888,58 NEW YORK. Oct 15.- Giants and White Sox will split up $152,888.58 as their share of the world'B series of 1917. Hereafter the national commission will get 10 per cent of the reoeipts, while the club owners will divide the rest. This means that the New York and Chicago clubs will earn at least $120,000 each. . Under the agreed distribution the players of the winning team will get 60 per cent of $152,888.58 which means they will divide $91,733.15. The play-! ers will divide 40 per cent or $61,155.- j 42. I The Giants have 24 players eligible. If they win the series each man will get $3,822.15. If they lose each man will get $2,548.14. The White Sox have 26 players eligible. Including Manager Rowland and Coach Gleason. If they win the series each man will get $3,528.13. If they lose each man will get $2,352.14. One year ago the share of the players was slightly more, the Boston Red Sox dividing $97,756.47 and the Brooklyn Robins $65,170.58. The record for attendance and receipts was set in 1912, when the Boston Red Sox and the New York Giants battled through eight games to a decision. In that year the total attendance and re-celpts was 251,901 and the total receipts $490,499. The Bhare of the players was $147,572.28 and the share of each club $146,916. Face the Truth. There are times when we should be thankful for the frankness that stings. We do not know ourselves any too well. If others lend us their eyes for a little, the revelation may be startling, but such unpleasant surprises are of real service to us. Let us be brave enough to face the truth about ourselves fearlessly. The friend who is frank is the friend who really helps. Exchange.

On The Screen MURRAY A boarding-house does not sound like a very "romantic" spot wherein to place the greater part of the scenes In a motion picture but Director J. Searle Dawley and Billie Burke together have injected into "The Mysterious Miss Terry," the star's latest picture for Paramount, all of the charm and romance of southern Italy or any one of the spots usually picked out by dramatists for their stories. "The Mysterious Miss Terry." while full of intrigue and suspense, Is nothing more than a good American story told in a most fascinating manner. It will appear at the Murray theater tonight WASHINGTON "Long shots" and "close-ups" are now well understood by all patrons of the silent drama. But a "bird's-eye shot" now makes its appearance for the fir6t time on the screen In "When False Tongues Speak," the William Fox production starring Virginia Pearson at the Washington theater Tries-' day. The story tells of a refined woman who finds her husband is deceiving her. In a lively scene following his efforts to free himself of her in which six people intimately connected with the plot are in or near the scene, the husband Is killed. A burglar who saw the murder from behind a screen where he was hiding clears up the mystery which was about to claim an Innocent man as its victim. The picture was directed by Carl Harbaugh, producer of many Fox masterpieces. The excellent photography and many weird effects are from the hand of Georges Benolt.
