FUEL SHORTAGE IN PROSPECT IN VAYNEJOUNTY Dealers Unable to Get Coal by Paying Government Prices.

The coal situation in Wayne county, judging by the accounts received from dealers, 1b approaching the crucial point on account not only of a shortage of cars, but because the dealers allege that the higher priced coal contracts have been given the preference over orders at the new government price. Berry Brothers at Lynn said Monday

practically all grades excepting lower

grade of Indiana coal were airacuit to get. One car of coal was in their

yards, and over 100 orders had to be filled. The only promise received froam coal centers was that cars might be expected in SO days, meaning a hardship to poor people should severe

weather set in.

The Fountain City elevator had one

car only of soft coal in its yards, Mon

day, of the Pocahontas bind. It was difficult to get even the mine run coal.

There are a number of orders on the

books that can not be filled. C. J

Hull, coal dealer, of the same city, said

he had been endeavoring to fill orders

for the last three months. Greensfork Has Little.

Greensfork coal dealers were practically out Of coal Saturday, with no

relief In sight from the wholesalers, with the exception of a promise of coal

in two weeks time. Williamsburg coal dealers were entirely out of coal, Saturday, and no relief had been promised on account of car shortage. Milton coal dealers, who had been fairly well stocked up the last three weeks, were confessing to a shortage, and said that farmers were coming a big distance to get coal, some as far as 16 miles. The cars on hand had to be parcelled out in small lots so as to satisfy customers for a time. Straughn ccal dealers also admitted the situation was serious. Cambridge City coal dealers only began to feel the shortage last week. Orders however have had to.be filled in small lots, and the unusual cry of car shortage, was emphasized In the connection that big contractors, especially manufacturers and the railroads were getting supplied while the coal dealers were neglected, even on mine run coal. One Car In Two Weeks. "One car in two weeks," was the answer given by Creitz and Deardorff, grain men and coal dealers at Centerville, Friday last. While admitting that the railroads had been hard put to it on account of army supplies, these dealers said emphatically that government priced coal could not be got, and that no relief seemed to be in sight at that date. Pershing coal dealers have been parcelling their car lots out to their customers during the last month, and although one of them is intouch with a center of supply through otner branch offices of the Hazelrigg company, a shortage is still , In evidence. Both firms have not enough coal to go round, and do not expect cars until the congestion on the railroad Is over.

SUB ESCAPES FROM SPANISH HARBOR

MADRID, Oct. . A German sub-

marine interned at Cadiz has escaped.

Several German submarines have sought refuge in Spanish ports during the war and one of them, which put in at Cadiz, was escorted out of the port later by Spanish torpedo boats. To prevent further incidents of this nature, King Alfonso on June 30 last, signed a decree forbidding submarines of belligerent powers to navigate Spanish waters or enter Spanish ports. It was declared that all submarines which entered the Spanish zone would be interned.

Farmer's Wife to Sell Liberty Bonds

Mrs. Lewis H. Beeson, wife of a prosperous Boston Township farmer, has been appointed vice chairman of the community Liberty Loan committee. Mrs. Beeson will have charge of subscriptions in the western part of Boston township.

The star ordered the xylophone sent to his dressing room for practice purposes, but fortunately for the studio, the men were detected in the act of bringing It into the studio grounds and hastily ejected it before serious musical damage could be done. The mob then repaired to the dressing room of Mr. Reid. who although very musical, plays only by ear, and whom, the mob of actors insisted, must be very hard of hearing. They forcibly took from him all his large collection of musical instruments, leaving him only the solace of his Jew'e-harp which they allowed him to retain for Sunday afternoon - concerts, one-half hour in duration, only. MURRETTE When Hobart Bosworth appeared around the Lasky studio In a German make-up for the Lasky-Paramount adaptation of George Broadhurst's play "What Money Can't Buy." in which Jack Ptckford and Louise Huff will be seen at the Murrette today and Wednesday, supported by Theodore Roberts and other famous players, he was the subject of a great deal of chaffing. Just at this time Cecil B. de Mllle was casting his company for one of the Mary Pickford productions and spied Bosworth in the German make-up. He immediately assigned him a famous role of a German colonel. Playing two German characters In succession was too much for the actor and he finally pleaded with Mr. de Mille to change It
