MUSIC FEATURES CELEBRATION OF LUTHER'S WORK

Mass Choir of 175 Voices to Sing Cantata "The City of God."

The Quadricentennial of the Protestant Reformation will be celebrated in Richmond, Sunday afternoon and evening, October 28, In the Coliseum, when three Lutheran churches of Richmond, First English, SL Paul's and Second Lutheran churches will have a part in the program. A chorus of 175 voices made up of members of the three churches will sing and an orchestra of 30 pieces composed chiefly of musicians of the churches, will play at both servicese. Lee B. Nusbaum has charge of the orchestra and chorus and Judging from the rehearsal held Tuesday night at the First English Lutheran church the music will be one of the features

of the entire program, on' "The City of God" is the name of the Nil, cantata to be presented at the evening wwi session and was written by H. Alexan- ; der Matthews, especially for the com

memoration of the quadricentennial. Text by Dr. Reed.

The text is by the Rev. Luther D. Reed, D. D., professor in the Lutheran Theological Seminary at ML Airy, Philadelphia. He has portraved the church under the biblical figure of "The City of God" and its foundation, decay and restoration are described in the scrip

tural phrase. The spiritual significance of the Reformation is 6trongly emphasized by introducing into the third part of the work the great sayings of Christ as well as the use of passages of Bcripture which express reformation principals. The music has been conceived in the loftiest spirit and from beginning to the end the musical ideas are expressed with sustained vitality, beauty and power. There are solos for soprano, tenor, and baritone and several splendid choruses. A special feature is the use of three historic reformation hymns, "Be Not Dismayed, O, Little Flock," "Lord Keep Us Steadfast In Thy Word" and "A Mighty Fortress is Our God." These are sung by the choir and congregation as climaxes to the Bec- - ond, third and fourth parts of the work. The soprano solos will be taken by t Mrs. F. W.. Krueger, Mrs. Fred J. Bar1 tel; tenor, 0. P. Nusbaum, Ernest tit Renk; bairtone, Ben Bartel.
