MUSIC IS NEED OF NEW SOLDIERS AT CAMPTAYLOR Spahr Asks Wayne County Folks to Help Provide Instruments.
CAMBRIDGE CITY. Ind., Sept. 28. The Local Board for Division No. 2, acting upon the suggestions contained fa the following letter, have appointed a person in each township and incorporated town within the limits of the Division to form aa organization to raise a fund for the purchase of a talking machine and other articles that may be considered necessary to the comfort and happiness of the boys now belonging to the 56th Company at Camp Taylor. Camp Taylor, Ky., Sept. 24, 1917. W. C. Squire. Cambridge City, Ind. Dear Dr. Squire: You and the people back home will be glad to know the present situation of the boys here at Camp Taylor. I am sure. AH the boys from District Board No. 2 are In the 56th Company, and In their quarters. Many are acquainted with each other and are having a good time, which of course creates a good spirit among them. But, on the other hand, there are several who seem lonesome and are at a loss to know what to do. This latter situation we wish to remedy, and with the help of the peo
ple back home it can be done. To Take Care of Spare Hours. When the boys are in their quarters, they find little to do but to Eit around on their cots and think about home and to wish that they were out of the army. A, way must be found to help them use their spare hours in a useful and profitable manner, and to have a good, jolly, social time. The officers here are very anxious that the boys be as happy as possible, and are doing all in their power to make it so. But they realize that they cannot do it all without your help. The - company must have a spirit of its own, an "espirit de corps." They must get acquainted and have good times together, if the homesickness is to be - dispelled, and the boys made to enjoy the work they must do. The Y. M. C. A. does much fo furnish amusement, and is a place for profitable recreation, but it cannot meet the situation when the entire company Is in its quarters, as is the case much of the time. The boys need music probably more than anything else. In several instances the people back home have sent a victrola and records to the company as absolution to the situation. Thre is no doubt that all the home people wish their boys to be as happy and contented as possible, and would gladly do their best to make them so, if they could only find a way of doing it. Officers Approve Plan. The officers here feel that a victrola in the quarters of the company would be one of the best things the boys could have, so I am writing in the interest of the 56th Company, with the sanction of the company commander. If this matter could be put before the people in some manner there would soon be found a sufficient number of public spirited persons who would be only too glad to take up the matter and push it through. A small contribution from those Interested would soon put a victrola and records in the quarters of the company. Some companies have a fund out of which they buy whatever they most need and desire. The Company Com
mander says that he will buy the boys a football and basketball himself in order that they may have them. It should not be accessary that he do this out of his private funds. Here la another opportunity for the people back home to help the boys. Others might provide a means by which the boys could get the home newspapers. All of these matters are of vital interest to the boys, and should not be allowed to pass without proper recognition at home. It will mean everything to the boys, and will be met with the highest appreciation on their part. Anything you may be able to do in the line of a musical .instrument company fund, or sporting goods, will be properly cared for and administered by the Company Commander, Fred B. Oerberding. and any questions will be answered through me. Thanking yon in advance on behalf of the 56th Company for what I am sure you will find you can do, I am. Very sincerely yours, WALTER E. SPAHR. 56th Company, 14th P. T. Battalion, 159th Depot Brigade, Camp Taylor, Ky.
