Williams tG Oppose Teaching of Foreign Tongues in Schools
County Superintendent Williams will leave for Indianapolis Thursday evening to attend a meeting of the State board of education to be held Friday morning. Superintendent Williams received a letter from L. P. Benezet, superintendent of the Evansville. Ind., schools asking him to support a program which will be presented to the board at this meeting, which will do away with compulsory courses in foreign languages In Indiana schools. The letter spoke of the lack of necessity for foreign languages In courses such as industrial and commercial and declared that Indiana was behind many other states in this matte?. - Cites An Example. The letter also cited an example from the Evansville negro school
where 700 negro boys and girls are taught Latin. "It seems absurd to me," the letter declared, "to teach these darkles about Gaul and Helvetians when they should be learning how to lay bricks and wash dishes."
Umpleby is Given Watch by Fellows Members of the operator's department of the Pennsylvania office force here presented C. R. Umpleby, who leaves Friday morning for Camp Taylor with a wrist watch Thursday afternoon. The watch was given to Umpleby at a meeting of the office force of the department Thursday afternoon.

Headquarters detachments are first to get arms at Camp Grant and are here shown drilling with new weapons. The men look and act as though they hd been in the service for months instead of only a few days and it is expected that many of them will soon be made noncommissioned officers.

Howard Taylor, of the Home Altar League, declared at the general meeting, in a plea for family worship and religion in the home. . Sheriff Carr, chairman of the board complimented the men on their promptness and at the same time impressed upon them the necessity of promptness in military life. He also spoke favorably of the Italians who were among those in the list. All but one of the Italians were present and only one of ten was late. "Released on Town Leave." At 8:33 Friday morning the men will leave the office of the board and march In a body to the station where at 9:40 o'clock they will leave on a special train for Louisville and the camp. All of the men are required to report at the office of the conscription board before going to the station, and must then go to the station in a body. This is required by government orders and cannot be changed by the board.
