Ayres of Fortvllle. Approximately 1100,000 was the price paid by Ayres. He Is enthusfastio over the prospects of the field, considering It the best natural gas field In Indiana. Ayres was formerly Republican state committeeman from the Blx,th district, and has extensive oil and gat interests In Indiana, Illinois and Kentucky.

dent officers of the new national army and numerous Russian-American so
cletles.
Mayor William Hale Thompson, who Is out of town, was represented by Eugene R. Pike, city controller, who welcomed the mission on behalf of the
city. WRITER FOUND DEAD
LOS ANGELES. Cal.. Aug. 8. Walter Korr, novelist and short story writer, was found dead last night in his apartmonts. A bottle which the , police said had contained poison was found near the body. A note stated i he took bis life because of despond- : ency over the Inability to sell bis ! stories during the war. Kerr had j written under the pen names of "H. H. Vhopperton" and . "Francis F. France."

Bertha Clalche. the young French girl, who was lured Into a mock marriage by Emile Gerdron and brought to the United States here to be put on the streets and compelled to support hex brutal master in idleness and almost luxury. Gerdron abused the girl frightfully and finally drove her to desperation when he attempted to make a white slave of her younger sister. Bertha Claiche shot Mm after futile appeals to the New York police. The whole sordid story of New York white slavery came out at the triaL The jury and judge let Bertha Claiche off as lightly as possible. She was sentenced to two years in the Auburn Penitentiary, and after that period was pardoned. Maud TaiijTgtrw Booth, the Salvation Army loader, took charge of the girl when
she left prison and led her to a happier and better life. Many wealthy
women also aided In putting Bertha Claiche on the right path, which she had originally left through no fault
of her own.
