Our Human Wastage

. Cora Wilson Stewart in The Christian Herald

insists that illiteracy is greater in the rural than

in the urban sections of the United States. Her

statement comes as a' surprise to most of us. The

opinion is general that the large proportion of

foreigners in our cities creates more illiteracy there than in the country where "che farmers, as a rule, are native born. Her conclusions are justifiable if one considers that there are vast areas and many isolated districts in the United States where school houses are few and far between. Unless the parents are of good stock and alive to educational needs, their children are reared in ignorance. These children must be reclaimed. The illiterate adults must be given a chance to acquire the rudiments of learning. Their education is a duty we owe them primarily. The nation itself will benefit by the reclamation of these men and women. Miss Stewart observes with truth: ;The schools need these- men and women. They heed them to coperate. "Ignorance cannot co-operate," it is said, and co-operation is the life

of public education. The Sunday-schools and churches need these people to attend and support .them, to work and Worship; the banks need the money that they have hoarded in cupbords or buried in the ground ; the newspapers need them ,as readers, the book publishers need them as paI trons and Uncle Sam needs them to patronize his atampstores, the postoffices. Bafr njgre by far than all the needs of school and church and trade, these men and women need and deserve, for theiu-own sake, to be redeemed. They are barred from life's best things good books, letters and intelligent voting. They are

WILL BE HANGED

Decisive Steps Thomas E. Wilson, head of a great Chicago meat packing house,- thirty years ago Uood in line waiting for a job. Now he draws V125.000 annually and besides owns a big block of stock in the concern which he manages. How did he do it? He says that he went on the theory when a boy that each task he approached might possibly

be the one that would determine his whole future, j Or in other words, he believed that every job was worth doing the best he knew how. He believed in a thorough discharge of duty. Today, as the head of a company that employs thousands of men and out of the fullness of his own experience, he sizes up his men on the following theory : "When a man takes a job with the air of Ioing me a favor to accept it, I know that he is apt to think that he has discharged his full obligation in taking the place, without doing much afterward." The mental and moral attitude of the man he describes , is the deterrent that keeps many men from advancing far in their calling. They believe that they are doing the firm a favor by accepting a position, instead of working on the theory that the firm is giving them an opportunity to advance. Advancement comes by way of hard work and conscientious discharge of duty- and not by brilliant flashes anck wordy promises. The man who has vision enough to prepare himself for the job ahead, and moral fiber enough to make each day's work as nearly perfect as possible, is the man who forges to the front. Nothing can keep him back. Many of our young men chafe at an apparent delay in their advancement, forgetful of the long .training and experience that is the necessary preparation for the job ahead. The career of al.rnost every big man shows that he did every .task well and was selected for promotion because of the faithfulness with which he performed his menial tasks.

Corner

Editor's note E. P. Murphy, civic gardener, will answer all questions about your garden in The Palladium; write to him.

E. P. JIurphy, care of Palladium I have some cauliflower plants in my garden. One of my neighbors told me that they should be tied up. Should this be done? I. W. S. Answer They should be tied up just as soon as the head begins to form. Draw the outer leaves up over the head and tie them in this position. If tying is not done, the head will not be white and solid.

Mr. Murphy, care of Palladium Is it a good plan to mulch strawberries now? K. W. J. Answer It Is advantageous to mulch the strawberry patch along about the first part of December. The mulch then serves as a protection from the cold and prevents the alternate freezing and thawing from "heaving out" the plants.

Mr. E. P. Murphy, Civic Gardener, care of Palladium What is the best thing to get rid of cabbage worms? K. U. W. -Answer If one has only a few plants they may be picked off and destroyed. One may use lime, alum water, ashes, or white hellebore.

Lemon Juice Softens and Whitens Rough, Red Hands

Women can make a quarter pint of wonderful lemon beauty cream for few cents.- Nothing so good!

To soften, smoothen, and whiten the face, neck, arms, and particularly the hands when chafed, red or rough there is nothing better than lemon juice, but pure lemon juice is too highly acid and often irritating. A splendid lotion is prepared in a moment by squeezing the juice of two fresh lemons into a bottle contaaining three ounces of orchard white. Be sure to strain the lemon juice through a cloth eo no pulp gets into the bottle, then this creamy

lotion will stay sweetly fragrant and fresh for months. Any grocer will supply the lemons and any druggist or toilet counter will sell you three ounces of orchard white for a few cents. ' , This Is the best lotion you could use. 'Massage it daily into the face, neck, arms and hands and see for yourself. It helps remove tan, sallowness, and freckles, and every girl knows that lemons are used to bleach and whiten the skin.
