ROOT DISPELLS OPPOSITION OF ROSS SOCIALISTS

American Envoy and Party Cordially Welcomed by Extreme Wing of Republic. MOSCOW, (Friday). June 22. The first meeting attended here by Elibu Koot and the other members of the American commission was held today In the palace of the Governor General. There were assembled representatives of the zemstvo and municipal unions, the zemstov industrial committee and the local council of the workmen's and soldiers' deputies. . The meeting was in the nature of test to determine whether the commission was to have the real sympathy of the. Socialist element in the country. It was said here that no foreigner ever before succeeded in enlisting the attention and interest in this association of comtmttees representing the work ing masses of Moscow. But as Mr. Root began to speak antagonism and indifference yielded to -rapt attention and he was warmly applauded at the conclusion. '- - "Marvel- at Self-Control." ."We have seen nothing since we came to Russia," said Mr. Root, "that gives cause for criticism. We marvel at the self-control, the kindliness of spirit and the sound common sense that the Russians display.- We feel that the work you are doing in the committees is on the right path toward an actual permanent democracy. "The government of Germany, the German social system, even German socialism, are all militaristic In their essential nature.. They shall not gain control of free America, and If we can help you to prevent their gaining control of free Russia we shall be happy In feeling that we have assisted in the perpetuation of the ideals of our fathers, who fought and sacrificed to make us free." , .

The representatives of the various J

groups replied, larmmiy weitummg mi. Root and the other members of the commission. The entire assembly arose and cheer ed the Americans when they left the hall. ...... On motion of the mayor the meeting unanimously decided to send a telecram . to President Wilson thanking

him for sending the Root commission J

to Russia.

VOLPICKA ON LAST LEG OF AROUND-WORLD TRIP

WASHINGTON, June 25. Charles I. Volpicka. American minister to Serbia, Bulgaria and Roumania, was today preparing to leave here in continuation of his , globe-circling trip from Bucharest to Jassy, cities usually niue hours distant. The minister was in Bucharest when the Germans took the city, and was not allowed to pass the lines to his station in Jassy. In order to resume his duties in Rumania he found it necessary to cross AustriaHungary and Germany and embark for America. Hit route now lies across the Pacific and through Siberia and Russia.

King sat down again, panting. He wanted time to get his breath back and a little of the ache out of his ribs, but- he did not care to waste any more minutes, and his eyes watched, the faces of the other four men. He saw them slowly, waken to understanding of what Ismail meant by "worker of spells" and "magic in the bag" and knew that be had even greater hold in them now than Yasmini's bracelet gave him. - - "Manibjllsh!" they murmured as Ismail's, meaning dawned and they recognised a magician in their midst "May God protect us!" "May God orotect me! I have need

of it!" said King. "What shall my!

new name be? Give ye me a name!" "Nay, choose thou!", urged Ismail, drawing nearar. "We have seen one miracle; now let us hear another!" "Very well. Khan is a title of respect. Since I wish for respect, I will call myself Khan. Name me a village the first name you can think of quick!" "Kurram," said Ismail, at a hazard. "Kummam is good. Kurram I am! Kurram Khan Is my name henceforward' Kurram Khan the dakitar!" "But where is the sahib who came from the fort to talk?" asked one of the men. "Gone!" announced King. "He went with the other one!" "Went whither? Did any see him go?" . "Is that thy affair?" asked King, and the man collapsed. It is not considered wise to the north of Jamrud to argue with a wizard, or even with a man who had changed his very nature almost under their eyes. "Even his other clothes have gone." fcnurmured one man, he who had poked about among the packs. "And now, Ismail, Darya Khan, ye two dunderheads! when was there ever a dakitar a hakim, who had not two assistants at the least? Have ye never seen, ye blinder-than-bats how one man holds a - patient while his boils are lanced, and yet another makes the hot iron ready?" "Aye! Aye!" They bad both seen that often. "Then, what are ye?" They gaped at him. Were they to work wonders too? Were they to be part and parcel of the miracle? Watching them. King saw understanding dawn behind Ismail's eyes and knew he was winning more than a mere admirer. He knew it might be days yet, might be weeks before the truth was out, but it seemed to him that Ismail was at heart his friend. And there are np friendships stronger than those formed in the Khyber and beyond no more, loyal partnerships. The "Hills" are the home of contrasts, of blood-feuds that last until the last-but-one man dies, and of friendships that no crime or need or slander can efface. It the feuds are to be avoided like the devil, the friendships are worth having. "There is another thing ye might do," he suggested, "if ye two grown men are afraid to see a boil slit open. Always there are timid patients who hang . back and refuse to drink the medicines. There should be one or two among the crowd who will come forward and swallow the draughts eagerly, in proof that no harm results. Be ye to they?" Ismail spat savagely. "Nay! Biamillab! . Nay, nay! I will hold them who have boils. I will drink no draughts! I am a man, not a cess-pool!" - "And I will study how to heat hot irons!" said Darya Khan, with grim conviction. "It is likely that, having worked for a blacksmith once, I may learn quickly 1 I have tasted physic! I have drunk Apsin Saats!" He spat, too, in a very fpry of reminiscence. "Good!" said King. "Henceforward then, I am Kurram Khen, the dakitar, and ye two are my assistants, Ismail to hold the men with boils, and Darya Khan to heat the Irons both of ye to be my men and support me with

words when need be!" "Aye!" said Ismail, quick to think of details, "and these others shall be the tasters! Let them -swallow a little of each medicine In the chest now for the sake of practise! Let them learn not to make a wry face when the taste of cess-pools rests on the tongue " ""Aye, and the breath comes sobbing through the nose!" said Darya Khan, remembering fragments of an adventurous career. "Let them learn to drink Apsin Saats without coughing!" "We will not drink the medicines!" announced one of the men. "Nay, nay!" But Ismail hit him again with the back of his hand and danced away hugging himself and shouting "Hee-yee-yee!" until the jackals joined him in discontented chorus and the Khyber Pass became full of weird howling. Then suddenly: the old Afridi thought of something else and came back to thrust his face close' to King's. "Why be a Rangar? Why be a Rajput, sahib? She loves us Hillmen better!" Do I look like a Hillman of the 'Hills' asked King? "Nay, not now. But he who can work one miracle can work another. Change thy skin once more and be a true Hillman!" . To be continued

MACHINE GUNS USED ON SEIIlli FEINERS

put up all over the county: "Vote for poor old honest Finly Gray. He's too poor to have any money to hir.e a band and buy up the leading newspapers of a district to fight his campaign for him." Fir.ly Has $10,000 Connersville Republicans have looked up the tax duplicates and have discovered that "Practically Penniless" Gray is assessed for more than $10,000 of real estate, 'Elliott's assessment being about one-tenth that amount. ' v ' In three normally Democratic counties, Shelby, Hancock and Franklin, the outlook is far from encouraging to the Gray leaders. In Hancock county several of the most influential Democratic leaders are out in the open after Gray's scalp, and this situation exists, to a less degree, in Shelby county." In Franklin the activity of "Brother George" Gray in the conduct of Finly Gray's campaign has hurt the Democratic nominess greatly. Judge is "Im Bad" The former judge is "in bad" with many Franklin Democrats, and when the word -was passed around that if Finly Gray ' was elected, "Brother George" would receive an appointment with a fat salary attached to it several Democratic , workers in and around Brookvllle jumped the party reservation and went on the warpath against the Gray brothers. In Union county and in Rush county predictions were made today that EUiott would carry each county by substantial majorities. Elliott has made a thorough canvass of the district despite the short duration of the campaign and has made a splendid impression everywhere.
