Newspapers Given Material accusing Aliens of Plots

COPENHAGEN, June 23. The German newspapers today have been furnished with elaborate material for declaring that prisoners of war in Ger

many, particularly the French, Russian

and Serbian, were participating in a

.gigantic conspiracy to interfere by sabotage with war work in the interior and were engaged in a large scale In arson, crop destruction and at-

tempts to Injure machinery.

The papers, were given dime novel details about the dispatch of materials

for arson in double bottomed jam pots

and of cigarettes containing disease

germs for infecting cattle, etc.

It is difficult to tell to what extent

these tales are dut to the honest belief of officials and how much of a delib

erate design to put the people on guard against possibilities. The general staff employed . this maneuver on a large scale at the outbreak of the war to obtain popular co-operation In their

efforts against espionage.

They deliberately invented and

launched tales of gold laden automo

biles traversing Germany from

: France to Russia, and attempts of foreign agents to poison the water sup- ' ply, blow up tunnels and carry out sim- ' ilar exploits.

mand in the army, was held , up ana greatly delayed. Staff officers engaged in important missions were arrested by voluntary rpy catchers and were lucky if not bad- ' ly beaten and mobbed. The military authorities were soon begging the ' iople to forget about the spies.

In a Chicago court, the Countess Gizycka, fqrmerly Miss Eleanor Medill Patterson, told a story of neglect and unhappiness on the lonesome estate of her husband, Count Joseph Gizycka, that finally decided Judge Charles M. Thompson to grant her a decree of divorce. She said the ancestral estate oKher husband proved to be a ramshackle castle surrounded by peasants', huts and five miles from a railroad. . The "seventy servants turned out to be a horde of Russian peasants who received no pay but their food and trifling presents at Christmas. '. - She married the Count in Washington in 1904.

other basic material over which goveminent supervision may be proposed during the war, was decided upon today by the senate interstate com

Capsules May be Used in Drawing Names For Draft

WASHINGTON, June 23. The or

dinary medicine capsule may be the means of determining the Indiana conscripted men who shall go to war.

The - provost marshal general and

the experts who are advising him

have considered many lottery schemes

which are recommended for fairness,

but the one most in favor at the present time is a novel arrangement to use capsules.

Under this plan every registered

man is to be indicated by a number. A record is to be , made of the man

and his number. Not even the man

himself will know what his number is until after the drawing. Each number will be printed on a slip of paper

and each slip will be rolled up so that the number does not show : and inserted in a capsule. All of the capsules at each drawing place will then be put in a Marge vase and the capsules will be given a thorough shaking up. Then the drawing will take

place. It is claimed for this nlan that

its fairness can never be questioned. In the first place, the person making the drawing cannot see the numbers in the capsules and in the second

place, even if he could see the number, he would not . have the faintest idea as to the identity of the person represented by any particular number. Unless the provost" marshal general and his expert advisers change their minds, this probably will be the system adopted. The old-fashioned jury wheel plan was at first thought of, but it was decided on mature consideration that it would be unsatisfactory.

British Steamer Did Not Bring in German Prisoners

AN ATLANTIC PORT, June 23. The British vice-consul at this port disclosed today that there was no truth ( in the report that a British steamer arriving here, had aboard prisoners from a German raider sunk cr captured at sea. The steamer in question, it is said, arrived here yesterday, with only her crew aboard.

Indiana Roads Are Lauded by Tourists

Richmond hotel managers say tourists are just now beginning to come through the city. Owing to the late season, few have passed through. "They all remark about the exceptionally good roads around Richmond,"

FUNERAL FOR BOY VICTIM OF BICYCLIST IS HELD

FOUNTAIN CITY, Ind., June 23. Funeral services were held here Thursday afternoon for Roger Pickett, four years old, of Dayton, O., who was run over and injured fatally by a bicycle rider in Dayton ' Tuesday. The boy's skull was fractured. An operation was made in the effort to save his life, but he died shortly after the accident. He was buried in Willard Grove cemetery near his twin brother, who died about three years ago. -
