SENATOR RAPS RECORD OF MY II. GRAY i .V", ' " 1 unm 1 i" t - 4 - 4 , Fernild Pleads T for Election of Elliott , in Speech at r Fountain, City. , . :'j

FOUNTAIN CITY, Ind., June- 22. New Garden township roteri care entbuaiaetlc; greeting to 1 Senator '"'Bert Fernald of Maine who spoke here last night at the K. of P. hall In the1 intereats of the candidacy of Richard N. Elliott,. Republican congressional nominee. .; - ,, .v . "Plans for peace" was the topic the senator discussed. ; He predicted that unless there was a Republican protective tariff on the statute books - at the close of the world war this conntry would be ingulfed with the paupermade products of Europe. -. He said the. American' people must look ahead to -this, time and have a Republican- majority in - congress - before the close of the war. This was one , of the . principal arguments Sena tor Fernald advanced for the election of Mr. Elliott.. , . . , ; Fred White Presides. Fred White of Richmond presided over the meeting, and made an eloquent plea to the people of New Garden' township to subscribe in full, or over-subscribe, the township's quota of the Red Cross war fund. Senator Fernald explained that Republicans In congress were doing everything in their power to support the president In his war measures. He pointed out that "it was Representative Kahn of California, a Republican, who led the fight in the house for the army bill which. President Wilson submitted, and he reminded his auditors that Representative Kitchen, of North Carolina, the Democratic floor, leader, was the man who led the fight against this measure. He declared the clamor being made by Democratic speakers, that the president must have a Democratic congress to support him in this war, was absolutely ludicrous. Pleas - Are Amusing. ."Last year the Democrats asked the voters for their support,, because we kept you out of war,' and now they ask your support because we are at war.' It is really amusing," he said. In reference to the candidacy of Finly K. Gray, Democratic congressional nominee, he said: - . .": "I can not refrain from saying that Gray's career does not stamp him as a man- of progressive tendencies or of farseeing ability,".. said Senator Fernald.. V'aa he opposed increases in the irmy and navy in at least two set and carefully prepared speeches. If he and : other Democrats had assumed the proper course we would be prepared today and the war could be closed much sooner than it will be. . Career Has No Appeal. "Gray's political career does not appeal to the voters of this district as a man that they wish to have represent them in this crying hour of our country's .need, as it would be a long step from the attitude he assumed and the principles he advocated during his public career, to the posiUgn voters of this district and of the country at large expect him to take.. . "On the other hand Elliott is in the prime of life, stalwart and true, and will be found standing with his party in all public questions of the day. "He has given assurance in public speeches and to his friends that he uould first of all stand by the people, which is the highest duty a public man can conceive. I am satisfied after conversation with tn.e leading citizens of the county and district that Elliott will be elected by a much larger majority than Judge Comstock was in the last election. . :

The United States bureau of fisheries is attempting to introduce into the Pacific ocean, fish that are natives of the Atlantic, and vice versa. . WASHINGTON Ministers of all shades of religious belief, physicians of ever school of medical practice, and thousands upon thousands of non-professional people who crowded the Park Theatre In New York during its four weeks run, have united in praise of the great seven-reel Ivan feature . "Enlighten Thy Daughter," which Is coming to the Washington theatre tonight. The play was the sensation of motion pictures in New York during its stay of a. month at the Park, and .the demand for admission was so great that, for the first time -in the history of the business police . reserves had to be called out to keep the' anxious crowds in check. The play, which in itself is big enough and stirring enough to attract more than ordinary attention, gains added weight' from , the excellent selection and balancing of the cast, which includes such sterling Bcreen favorites as Frank Sheridan, Arthur Donaldson, Katharine Kaelred, Zena Keefe, Rubye de ' Remer, James Morrison, with others of great, merit but lesser fame. MR. VOTER If you want to do a patriotic service in this time of war, vote next Tuesday to send to Congress from the Sixth District a man who will give the President "most generous and cordial support." That man is Hon. Finly H. Gray who has been tried and found true to the President. Why send some other man who has no record and about whom you know little or nothing? Send an experienced man who has made good. TAKE NO CHANGES-VOTE FOR GRAY :i.-Y r '," '-y . . .' ' " . . '. -: - . . s Political Advertisement paid for by the Sixth District Democratic Committee
