Elliott Says He's Sure to Win Since Opponent Has "Joined Our Forces." CONNERSVILLE. Ind., June 19. 3enator Wesley L. Jones of Washington, first of the Republican advance guard to enter the Sixth district to work for the election of Richard N. Elliott as representative in Congress to succeed the late Daniel W. Comstock, was given an enthusiastic reception here last night. The senator addressed an audience estimated at 1.100. In order to accommodate the crowd a tent was pitched just outside the main business district and there a crowd collected between the hours of 6 and 7 o'clock anxiously awaiting the arrival of the distinguished visitor. Senator Jones delivered a forceful oration. The address was almost solely an educational one, the senator refraining from "mud slinging." He scarcely mentioned the name of Finly H. Gray, the Democratic candidate, but was loud In his praise of Mr. Elliott After reviewing the work of the administration he dwelt on the need of u protective tariff after the war and urged the election of a man who would uphold such a policy and the administration now. He closed with a tribute to Elliott. County Chairman E. Ralph Himelick introduced the speaker. Applause Is Frequent. Applause interrupted him many times. He was forced to rap for order when the crowd broke into mighty cheers. "Americanism and Republicanism" was his theme. The speaker handled his subject in a very able manner. The event was one of the opening guns in the oratorical contest that will be waged in this district during the next eight days. That Interest is aroused to a high pitch was shown in the fact that the audience was one of the largest ever attending a political .meeting here. Mr. Elliott attended the meeting and spoke briefly. Finly H. Gray, the Democratic nominee for congress, also was present, occupying a rear seat on the platform. Mr. Elliott facetiously called the crowd's attention to the presence of Mr. Gray. "Joined Our Forces." Elliott said he had been confident of his election from the first but was now convinced that victory would be his because it appeared that his opponent had "joined our forces." The crowd laughed heartily. Mr. Elliott stated that he had been over a great part of the district the last ten days and he had yet to visit a community where his candidacy had not received the heartiest encouragement, this being especially , true in sections hitherto strongly Democratic. SENATOR CURTIS SCORES GRAY'S RECORD IN CONGRESS KNIGHTSTOWN. Ind., June 19. Scoring the record made in the National House of Representatives by Finly H. Gray. Democratic nominee for the place again. Senator Charles Curtis of

Kansas. Republican, last night, fired

would work in harmony with the ad

ministration in the present crisis. The speaker also criticised President Wilson for not sending Col. Roosevelt to

France at the head of a volunteer dl islon. C. C. Dean introduced the sen-

at or to a crowd which filled Bell's hall to capacity. Many women were

present. Senator Curtis will speak at Hagers town tonight.

NEGRO WOMEN TOLD HOW TO REGISTER; LINOLEY IS BOOSTED

A big audience of women was present at the meeting held Monday afternoon under the auspices of the Woman's Civic Council in the Ninth Street Baptist church to discuss registration and the coming elections in which the women of Indiana can vote. Mrs. M. F. McCurdy, the president, presided, and made a stirring address on "The Spirit of the Hour," which she designated as "preparedness." With this as a theme Mrs. McCurdy pointed out the necessity of the women of her race being in position to exercise their new duties intelligently, citing the conditions following the Civil War as an example of the unpreparedness of the men of the Negro race to cope with their new citizenship. Urged to Be Nonpartisan Mrs. McCurdy also urged the Negro women, in the coming municipal election, to be nonpartisan and vote for the "man of principle," rather than for the man of political party. "We want the man of principle in public office," said the speaker, "and will not vote for him on ony other

spoke on " registration, the constitutional convention and the necessity of -voting for a delegate from Wayne County who was unalterably for -suffrage. Boosts Dr. Llndley. Miss White referred to Dr. Harlow Lindley of the Earlham college faculty as an ideal delegate for Wayne county. "I have no knowledge as to whether or not Dr. Llndley would permit his name to be used but there is do one in Indiana who would be a finer representative. Dr. Lindley, while performing his civic duties, is removed frcnl all considerations of political bias. He is a member of the state historical commission, an authority on constitutional law, a man of the highest probity and yet not a radical. Fair, just, authoritative, well balanced, he would be an ideal candidate." Other speakers who made brief talks were Walter , Dennis, and the pastors of the A. M. E. and Ninth Street Baptist churches who said they would do all they could to assist the women in registering and voting. Registration blanks were distributed and explained and a large number of the "New Constitution Text Boob,'' issued by the Citizens' league sold. Miss White read a telegram, received during the time of the meeting,

from Mrs. Edward Franklin White, an attorney of Indianapolis, stating that the case brought in the Indianapolis courts to test the constitutionality of the woman's suffrage and new constitution law, was under advisement and that whichever way the decision went an appeal would be taken, indicating that an appeal would be made from any adverse decision to the two measures. Mrs. R. M. Goins, secretary of the council, conducted the devotional exercises with which the meeting was opened and Mrs. Grace Ferman read the minutes.

Over 18,000 applications for service in France have been received from English women.
