Do Your Bit for the Red Ceoss Indescribably great sacrifices in blood and money have been- offend by the European nations in the great war. ' " The United States bas been calledAon for its share. Men and money? for war are needed. OBut men; and money for the alleviation of hiuman suffering, for the salvage of the human wreckage left on the battlefields also tare needed, , and needed badly. : .. -Wayne county is expected to raise $50,000 as its quota for the Red Gross fund. This sum

seems staggering. A few years ago the solicitation of such an amount would have been declared inadvisable. But in the light of world conditions today, this sum is ''only a moiety of the amount all of us will have to help give before the conflict is concluded. Let us steel ourselves to the gravity of the task that confronts us and begin at once to make the sacrifices pf money that certainly will be asked by our government. The Red Cross is engaged in a noble work. ' It does not create suffering and death, but tries: to assuage suffering and prevent death It will not be long before our own boys will be wounded and maimed on . the battlefield. Do your share to prepare for them the relief and aid which the Red Cross through its efficient organization will extend. Help the Red Cross J

' uoooroj e, cauea runs.

Good-bye and good luck."

"Forward! March!" Kins ordered, and the little pr occasion started. ' "Oh, men of the 'HlUa, ye look like ghosts Ifke grareyard ghhosta! Jeered Courtney, as they filed past him. "Ye look like dead men. going to be Judged!" Nobody answered. They strode behind the horses, with the swtft silent strides of men who are golnx home to the "Hills"; but even they, born in the "Hills" and knowing them as a wolf-pack knows Its hunting-ground, were awed by the gloom of Khyber mouth ahead. King's voice was the first to break the silence, and he did not speak until Courtnay was out of

hearing.. Then: "Men of the Hills'!" he called. "Kuch dor nahln hal!" "Nahin hat! -Hah!" shouted IsmaiL "So speaks a man! Hear that, ye mountain folk! He says, There Is no such thing as fear'!" In his place in the lead, King, whistled softly to himself; but he. drew an automatic pistol from Its place beneath his armpit and transferred it to a readier position. . - Fear or no fear, Khyber-mouth is haunted after dark by the men whose blood-feuds are too reeking raw to let them dare go home and for whom the British hangman very likely waits a mile or two farther south. It is one of the few- places in the world where a pistol Is better than a thick stick. . . Boulder, crag and loose rock faded Into gloom behind; in front on both hands ragged hillsides were beginning to close In; and the wind, whose home Is In Allah's refuse heap, whistled as it searched busily among the ravines. Then presently the shadow of the thousand foot Khyber walls began to

count them all and let them close up.

New Method Removes Superfluous Hair Roots! I

Have you "tried everything" for that annoying hairy or fussy growth and about given up in despair? Well, there's just one thing more to try, and you must try it, because it is the one home treatment that reaches the very root of such troubles. The new process is not to be compared at all .with depilllatory electrical or any other method you've ever heard of. It is different "because it actually removes roots and all you see the roots with your own eyes. Just get a stick of phelactlne from your druggist, follow the simple Instructions, and if it doesn't do exactly SB stated you can have your money back without question. Phelactine is odorless, non-irritating and can be used with entire safety you could even eat it with impunity. It is an Instantaneous method. Adv.

would be tantamount to murder probably. . "Ride last!" he ordered Rewa Gunga. "You've got the only other pistol, haven't you?" Darya Kahn, who had brought the letter, had a rifle; so King gave him a roving commission on the right flank. They moved off again after five minutes, in the same deep silence, looking like ghosts in search of somebody to ferry them across the Styx. Only the glow of King's cheroot, and the lesser, quicker fire of Rewa Ounga's cigarette, betrayed humanity except that once or twice King's horse would

put a tfoot wrong and be spoken to.

"Hold up!" But "from five or ten yards away that might have been a new note in

the gaining wind or even nothing.

After awhile King's cheroot went

out. and he threw it away. A little

later Rewa Gunga threw away bis

cigarette. After that, the veriest five year-old, among the Zakka Khels.

watching sleepless over the rim of some stone watch-tower, could have

taken oath that the Khyber's unburied

dead were prowling In search of empty graves. Probably their uncanny silence was their best protection; but Rewa Gunga chose to break it after

a time.

"King; sahib!" he called softly, re

peating it louder and more loudly un

til Klnr heard him. "Slowly! Not

so fast2" "Why?"

King-did not check speed by a frac

tion, bnt the Hangar legged Ms mare into a canter and forced him to pull to the left of the . track and make room. ... "Because, sahib, there are men among those boulders, and to go too fast Is to make them think you are afraid! To them afraid is to invite attack! Can we defend ourselves with three . firearms between us? Look! What was that?" , ' . To be-contlnued TWO COLORED MEN TO BE TRAINED AS OFFICERS.

THOUGHTS TO THINK ABOUT. 1 Purity of purpose gives strength in strife, length in life, and winning ways. To insist that you are always right, puts upon you the whole burden of proof. "Thoughts have wings" angels of light the army of conquest thoughts rule the world. "Boosters" don't go "busted"; boosters are takers of profits, but "knockers" kill the game.

WASHINGTON Altogether - unusual and altogether delightful and entertaining play is "Maternity," the newest World-Picture

Brady-Mamo which today and Wednesday will be seen at the Washington with Alice Brady as the star and with a cast Including some of the foremost film favorites. When it is stated that this feature Is altogether different, that is exactly what is meant. It is altogether different in theme, in treatment andin the remarkable climax staged in a burning hospital. - The story tells of the manner in which a young wife, who fears motherhood, comes to a realization that mother love is the greatest thing in a woman's life. Alice Brady does some of the most brilliant work of her career in this production. She is ably assisted by a splendid cast in which is seen little Maggie Evans.
