" CALLS
ON DOCTORS TO OFFER SERVICES
T. R. Addresses American Medical Association British Officer Also Speaks. "... NEW YORK, .June 8. Joint sestionp of branches for symposiums, the chief of which was given over to a consideration of medical progress on Hunting infantile paralysis, marked the close today' of the sixty-eighth annual convention of the American Medical Association. At the joint meeting of the sections on nervous and mental diseases and the section on diseases of children, the program called for papers dealing with infantile paralysis by Dr. George Draper, New York; Dr. Charles Herrmann, New York; Dr. Lasalle Arcbambault, Albany, N. Y.; Dr. Frederick Tllney, Boston; Dr. Armitage Whitman, New York, and Robert W. Lovrtt, Boston. Britisher Speaks - The cry for aid from American physicians end surgeons from England and France was brought to the attention of the convention yesterday by Colonel T. H. Goodwin, of the British 'ar commission, and last night Colonel Theodore Roosevelt, speaking at the big patriotic meeting held in place of the usual ball, urged every delegate present to go back to his home and act as a missionary in the service of his country. ' "There ,is a terrible responsibility upon the' men of your profession," Colonel Goodwin said. "The -call of suffering humanity is awful. I hope the response will be generous and prompt." Warns Young Doctors Colonel Goodwin was Introduced by Dr. Franklin H. Martin, chairman of the medical section of the council of national defense, who repeated bis warning of Wednesday night to young physicians that if they did not offer their services to the government they, might soon be digging trenches. Two hundred members of the association yesterday inspected the newColumbia University war hospital The visiting physicians included representatives of the British and American armies. The entire institution will be portable and can be assembled, readily for service within a few days.
Landis Feels Blue; He Lost His Stick and Dog is Traitor LA CROSSE. Wis., June 8. Federal Judge Landis is feeling tolerable blue these days because of a crowning climax to a multipjicity of misfortunes. He has lost his famous hickory stick. The weatherbeaten' club which for years has been the court's companion disappeared. . The judge says he went out for a walk with the trusty stick grasped tightly In his right hand. He avers that at" no time during the walk did he loosen his hold, but at the end of it when he looked at his hand the stick was gone. He retraced his steps, but to no avail. This, however. Isn't all the gloom he exuded. John Somebody, once known as John Landis, has been given away, as every one knows. John, a rambunctious white bulldog, presumably liked the white haired jurist and the latter worshiped John. But a short time ago the judge made a visit to his one time pal with sad results, explained by .him as follows: "I thought John would fall all over me, but he turned up his nose and mad all the fuss over his new rela: tions. He's nothing but a" regular Benedict Arnold, that dog is."
Sun glasses have been invented for baseball players so hinged to the cap that a touch will drop them into position. - A man can see a ball coming toward him while looking at the sun.
