Urgent Need for Food Shown in Decision to Increase Teutons' Allotment.

' COPENHAGEN, (via London), June 8rThe rapid dwindling of German grain stocks under the drain imposed by the supplementary bread allowances, to compensate lor missing potatoes, was .the cause of the recent hastily summoned conference of representatives of the central powers in Berlin. Officials of the German food department, supported by energetic representatives from the military and diplomatic authorities!, won the grant of an additional proportion for Germany of ! the grain stocks captured in Rumania. Here's Other Side. A hint of somewhat different possibilities is given in a paragraph which slipped into a glowing account of crop prospects in the weekly Woche. This paragraph says: "If all conditions continue favorable Germany can hope for barely a medium harvest owing to the lack of fertilizers, particularly nitrates." The fruit harvest, according to experts, will also be only medium. AGED PREACHER BEING HELD IN KIDNAPING PLOTS SPRINGFIELD, Mo., June 8. An eighty-year-old preacher, known as a German sympathizer, is under surveillance here today in connection with the investigation of various abduction

plots being unraveled as a resun or the disappearance last week of Baby Lloyd Keet and the subsequent arrest of seven persons, alleged to have forme a kidnapping band. The fear that Lloyd Keet, may not be returned to his parents, appeared today to be increasing. Rumor after rumor has been 6ifted, only to leave the case clouded in the same mystery that has surrounded it since the night of May 30, when Mr. and Mrs. Keet returned home from a dance at the country club to find the child's cradle empty. Bloodhounds put on the trail of the suppopsed kidnappers the following morning took a scent that led only a few yards. It was declared by detectives that the abductors from there had driven away in a motor car. . ,

JULIA WALKER IS DEAD IN CAPITAL

INDIANAPOLIS, June 8. Mrs. Julia Fried Walker, former publisher of the Educator Journal, for years known in all parts of Indiana as a lecturer on educational subjects, and active In club circles, died early today at her home here, i - . ' She had been ill a number of years, and some time ago relinquished 6ome of her active, duties as publisher of the Educator Journal. Id spite of her ill health she continued until recently to deliver lectures in different parts of the state and at Purdue. Her last lecture trip was through Nebraska and Colorado. Two years ago 3he underwent an operation for a cancer.

June 8 A series of photographic plates of the bombardment of Oatend which have arrived in London, afford a remarkable example of the 'development of photographic observation and record by airplanes. They show in undeniable fashion that the British bombardment of Ostend last Tuesday was the most successful thing of its kind yet accomplished, ensuring that Ostend will be crippled as a useful German base for weeks if not permanently. RIO JANEIRO. June 8. Dr. Rodriguez Alves has oeen nominated for the presidency at a political convention l.eld here. Delt'in Moreira was named for vice president. Dr. Weuceslao Braz, the present head of the republic, completes his four years term on November 15, next year. Under the Brazilian constitution he cannot be a candidate for a succeeding term. Dr. Alves was president of Brazil from 1992 to 190d.

CENTRAL BOARD IS PLANNED FOR RED CROSS DRIVE

A central committee, to have complete charge of Red Cross campaign week, will be appointed tonight Representatives from various civic organizations, and prominent men from the county will attend. William Dudley Foulke will preside. Fred S. Bates, who attended a meeting at Indianapolis, will explain the general plan to be followed in this compaign. According to plans of the national committee the campaign will start June 18. Indiana's quota is $1,500,000. A central committee to be appointed by the association will have charge of the campaign. This committee and its chairman will select captains for teams of ten or twelve persons to do the canvassing. A luncheon will be held each noon, at which time reports from the different teams will be made.

AVIATORS TO FIGHT SAN DIEGO FIRES

DAYTON. O.. June 8. The Baltimore & Ohio through Kuhn, Loeb. and Company of New York, today bought the main line of the Cincinnati Hamilton and Dayton railroad from Cincinnation to Toledo, 201 miles for $3,500,000. The Wellston division, sold in two parcels, from Dayton to Berlin, 114 miles, to Kuhn, Loeb and Company, the organization managers for $1,160,000, and from Berlin to Dean, 37 miles to Joseph Joseph and Brothers Company for $77,500.

FILES DIVORCE SUIT.

Lewis Pierce filed suit in circuit court this morning for divorce from Ada Pierce, alleging cruel and inhuman treatment. Mrs. Pierce is a resident of Indianapolis. "

SAN DIEGO, Cal., June 8. Plans for an aerial fir fighting unit, believed to be the first of Its kind in the country were announced today by Louis Almgren, chief of the fire department. He arranged for the use of the fire fighters of a hundred horse power flying boat to be stationed at an aviation school here. ' When a water front fire starts, the chief or an assistant with chemical extinguishers, will be carried by air to the blaze. The speed by which fires may be reached In this way was given as the reasop for the step.

BOTTLE GIVES' NEWS OF DESTROYED SHIP

LONDON, June 8 A bottle containing a number of messages apparently written by members of the crew of the long missing American steamship Frederick has been washed ashore at the Orkney islands. The messages evidently were written by two Americans and five Spaniards. One of them was dated January 27, 1916. They contained information as to the circumstances under which the ship was lost. One of them said: "We are sinking in midocean." Others said the writers were dying.

HAITIEN DIPLOMAT ' MUST LEAVE BERLIN

'AMSTERDAM i (via London), June 8. The Haitien. charge d'affajrs at Berlin has been handed his passports, according to a dispatch from the German capitol. The : Haitien diplomat had previously handed to foreign secretary Zimmerman a note protesting against unrestricted submarine warfare and demanding compensation for losses caused to Haitien commerce and 'life. SEATTLE, Wash., June 8. Lieutenant Kennetth Heron, U. S. N., superintendent of new work at the Puget Sound navy yard, at Bremerton, was found dead in bed from a gunshot wound last night in a Bremerton hotel. A naval board today investigated the death to determine whether the wound was self-inflicted.

A semi-official announcement says that Austria has made a formidable concentration of forces on the Italian front by the withdrawal of troops from the Russian front The statement says that the Italians are now confronted by an estimated two-thirds of the entire Austrian army. TWO GAMES BOOKED BY SEMI-PRO CLUB

Two fast semi-pro baseball games have been booked for the Athletic park by Manager Barney Lichtenstadt, manager of the Richmond Independents. Richmond's first game at home will be played on July 4, at Athletic park when Barney's crew will meet Shad Cunningham's Muncie Grays. A return game will be played at Muncie on August 5. Games have been booked with Peru for August 17 and with Taylor's A. B. C. of Indianapolis for July 15.
