Advertising Is Effective Arm of Canada s War Administration
gT. LOUIS, Jane t. The advertising campaigns conducted by the Canadian government a aids to the woceseful prosecution of the war, were described to the Associated Advertising clubs of the world today by John II. Imrie. manager of the Canadian Fresa association. -Since the war began," he said, 'the Canadian government has conducted seventeen distinct advertising campaigns. During the last twelve months, its expenditures on display advertising has exceeded the combined expenditures during that period or any other tour general advertisers in Canada. Most of the advertising was done in connection with Canada's war problems." . Mr. Imrie related how the government had advertised in newspapers, throughout Canada, the food value of Canadian apples and thereby created a market for the large crop of 1914; how through advertising a fund of thirteen million dollars for the relief of famlUes of soldiers had been raisedand how by similar means, women had been obtained for the manufacture of munitions.. Mr. Imrie continued: "Soon after the war began, it was recognized that one of the most valuable contributions Canada could make to the prosecution of the war, would be In the form of food supplies. The problem was to impress upon every farmer in Canada the need of increased agricultural production. "The Canadian government was quick to recognize that advertising is the most speedy and the most effective means of reaching the people. The campaign resulted in an Increase of over ten per cent, in the area under culUvation, and, in conjunction with good weather conditions, in record
yields per acre for almost every class
of field products. . "Similar advertising .campaigns were conducted In 1916 and 1917 and there is now running in Canada a special hsmI to the. farmer to nreoare
now for even larger crops in 1918."

ITALY PINS HER FAITH ON AMERICA, MINISTER ASSERTS
WASHINGTON, June 7. Italy has determined to cut its consumption of coal and iron in half as a war measure to reduce its ship tonnage in line with the general policy adopted by the other entente allies in meeting the submarine menace, the Italian mission announced today. this policy, Italy wiu not only aid in conserving the resources of her allies but will also save labor and millions of dollars, formerly expended In the purchase of coal and iron abroad. The money saved, he said, could be used to better advantage in purchasing foodstuffs here. "This reduction was made possible," said Mr. Arlotta, "by intensive devel
