FRENCH TROOPS DISCOVER; RETREAT OF PRINCE EITEL ON WESTERN FRONT
NOYON, France, May 18. (Corre
spondence of the Aaaociated Presa.)
.The only. building remaining, intact in
all the region of Cbauny and aa far
north as Saint Simo, after the retreat of the Germans, was a wooden pavillion built upon a rise of ground between what was once the burg of Faillouel and the ruins of Flavy Le Martel. A rustic fence around the building bears in rustic letters this desig
nation : "Eltel Frederich Schanz"
(Eitel Frederick redoubt.) There is no evidence of the place having been fortified and the supposition is that it served as an observatory or resting place for the prince between spells at his regime of gardening, prescribed by his doctors to reduce his weight. Description of Building. '' The building comprises a single room papered in sky ' blue with gilt ornaments and furnished with rustic chairs and tables. -The veranda commands a view-of ruin and desolation. The second division of the Prussian guard -under Prince Eitel's orders operated here and the prince had hia headquarters in several different chateaus of the region.- The evidence of the inhabitants is that the occupying troops left no hardship untried upon them. Certainly nowhere In the zone evacuated by the German troops was the country more completely desolated. ; Aviators Discover Retreat. The first positive traces of prince Eitel Frederick in this region were found at Avricourt, in the department of the Olse, where ; he occupied the chateau of , Avricourt belonging to Count Balny at the end of October, 1915. French, aviators got the bearing of his headquarters and he left suddenly in 1916 for Fretoy Le .Chateau where he occupied the property, of Monsieur Dubois. He took with him air the furniture, dishes and plate of the count Balny. Russian prisoners . of war. were brought there to dig a deep underground shelter from airplane bombs for the prince. ' .-.. Demolish Headquarters. Prince Eitel was seen every morning during his sojourn at Fretoy spading in the garden of the chateau a physical exercise designed to reduce bis corpulence. French aviators surprised him at this exercise one morning in July last year. Their
bombs demolished the headquarters of the army telephone service and did other damage where upon Prince Eitel and his staff moved to other quarters not yet identified. The second division of the guard appeared on the front of the Somme
in ocpieaiuer, isio, uu rrmvo i established his headquarters in ' the chateau of Templeux La Fosse, about five miles from Peronne. After a
fortnights sojourn there, the - prince j and his staff were saluted one day by
about a hundred shells so wen aimed that the evacuation of the place became advisable. The next trace of the prince was again at the chateau of Fretoy where he established his headquarters though he lived at a spacious farm house nearby. There be had his sleeping room connected by a subterranean tunnel with a concrete armored shelter from bombs. - At Fretnoy, according .-. to revelations by inhabitants who passed ' the entire period of the occupation there, the men of the Second division of the guard made a clean sweep of everything' in sight that was transportable and even spaded up all' the gardens of the town for hidden objects, a work which is said ' have paid quite well. - ; ' ; - . ,, ... ... The men of the second division are very fond of the prince as the inhabitants observed. They noticed at the same time that the men of the guard were better clad and better fed than any other German troops who operated In the region. '"

Get a stick of phelactine, follow the simple directions, and you will be astonished and delighted or the druggist will refund your money without question. WASHINGTON ; Charming Ethel Clayton, who is one of the country's most popular - motion picture stars, is seen in the stellar role of "Yankee-Pluck," the newest World-Picture Brady-Made which will be shown at the Washington theatre on Tuesday and Wednesday. In this production Miss Clayton appears in the role -of -a patriotic young Yankee girl who is in love with a rising young
military officer This officer- has perfected a new army aeroplane and the Japanese government is very anxious to secure the plans of the aeroplane. The manner in which Miss Clayton frustrates the plans and efforts of an attache of the Japanese Embassy is thrilling and delightful. This is an extremely pleasing play with plenty of punch and plenty of thrills. Montagu Love is seen with Miss Clayton in the powerful role of the intriguing

Garden Question
Corner
Editor's note E. F. Murphy. -civic gardener will answer all questions about your garden in' The Palladium ; write to Jiim.
Mr. E. F. Murphy Is there something that can be grown, with cabbage to economize in space? C. V. G. 1 Answer As soon as '.'the cabbage plants have, been set,one may sow lettuce in the row between the cabbage plants. Then . one . may utilize : the ground still further by transplanting celery in the cabbage . row after the early cabbage-is : harvested. Early cabbage may also be followed by, late
string beans.
Mr. Murphy, Garden -Department
What Is the best kind of a soil for a garden? V. L. M. .;. - r - , ; . : f Answer The best soil for a garden is a soil which is "quick." That is, one which warms up early in spring; j a soil which" is easy to -work and keep i in good tilth; and one that responds quickly to fertilizing materials. This
Is. a rich, sandy loam; k , ,; ' ; ,.. A clay soil, -especially a heavy clay soilis usually sour, cold, and wet. We may improye.Qur clay soils for gardening , by v adding limestone to ; sweeten the soil, adding organic matter in the form" of, manure and green crops plowed under, and affecting good drainage. Palladium How thick should beets be left standing in the row? I. D. A. Answer, After - the plants are well up, they should be thinned to four or five inches in the row. v ; 'E. F. Murphy Why. are some plants set out? Why not" sow the seeds in the garden where you.want the plants and just let them stand? . ' " Answer The - main reason is" that the plant (requires a long growing sea
son and in order to get an early start, the seeds are sown in a hot-bed or hot bouse before '. the weather Is warm enough for them to be sown in the open ground.'- ;..,' r-.'t"'" ?v 4 There is also "another" reason for transplanting. Strawberry .plants,, e. g., "run out" if they are not reset about every three years. - Celery plants, are benefited by transplanting because resetting the plants; encourages the growth of fibrous roots and this is conductive to greater growth of tops;' '": , 4 ' - ; ,,
