PLEADS FOR RIGHT OF FREE SPEECH
f h $ Wk J 9-
By JOHN J. LENTZ, Former Congressman - front Ohio. Society and government have fought their way step by step to a free press, tree schools, free speech, and a free pulpit, knowing that all four of these agencies are necessary to promote and procure a correct public opinion. Opinions of today may be as far wrong as were those of the past. Half a century ago public opinion on opposite sides of the Mason and Dixon line justified a civil war, in which hundreds of thousands of men murdered each other. Today public opinion on either side would brand a man a traitor who would suggest that the controversy over States' rights be opened up again. Universal education, through a free press, free schools, free speech and a free pulpit is enriching and ennobling the average mind and equipping it to practice the deliberations of a great judicial tribunal and attain a more wholesome and righteous public opinion. A Cleveland school raised $150 for Red Cross, by a patriotic pageant held at the school. highway. Dated at Richmond. Indiana., this twenty-eighth day of May. 1917. LEWIS S.
