Wheat Prices Break on Rumors About ": Return of Futures
CHICAGO, May 17 Wheat prices broke as much aa 16c a bushel today on account mainly of assertions that Great Britain and other entente governments would sell . back , huge amounts of future delivery- wheat bought in the United States. The circumstance that the American government would be expected to guarantee in return that the British and other allied governments would receive when needed adequate supplies from this side did not prevent the reports of contemplated immense reselling from having an immense immediate sensational bearish effect. The mechanical suppression of trading as a result of present rules, however confine the amount of business to scanty proportions. Opening prices, which ranged from 7 to 16c lower with July $2.14 to $2.22 and Sept. at $1.95 to $2.00. was followed by many fluctuations within that range but then by relative steadiness at the Initial top figures. Corn and oats gave way with wheat. Offerings, though, were light and the bear side did not long attract dealers. Corn, after opening 2M off to 1 up fell to 4,4 under yesterday's close and then overcame most of the loss. Selling by houses with foreign connection weakened provisions. Orr the declines support came from stockyards concerns.
