Think About This
Let the American youth never forget that they possess a noble inheritance, bought by the toils and sufferings and blood of their ancestors; arid capable, if wisely improved and faithfully guarded, of transmitting to their latest posterity all the substantial blessings of life, the peaceful enjoyment of liberty, property, religion, and independence. The structure has been erected by architects of consummate .skill and fidelity, its foundations are solid, its compartments are beautiful as well as useful, its arrangements are full of wisdom and order, and its defenses are impregnable from without. It has been reared for Immortality, if the work of man may justly, asfrtre to such a title. It may, nevertheless, perish n an hour by the folly or corruption or negligenco of its only keepers the people. Republics nro created hv the virtue, t-ublic spirit and in
telligence of the citizens. They fall, when the
wle are banished from the public councils, because they flatter the people in order to betray them. Judge Story.
The Intoxication of Power
If eternal vigilance is the price of liberty, the the American people must be jealous of their constitutional rights at this moment. In the storm and stress of momentous issues, tyrants and Usurpers in the past have arrogated the people's rights to themselves and left humanity shackled jind enslaved. Men in power today differ little from those in the past. ' The tendency of vesting unlimited power in the hands of the executive department of our government can be seen by any citizen who has read the newspapers in the last two weeks. The rights of the legislative branch have been seriously infringed upon and legislation now pending in Congress would make the executive department supreme in many respects. , . Congress must keep in mind that the American people know their , constitutional rights, know the dangers that lurk in the usurpation of power by the executive department, and will demand the defeat of all legislation that would muzzle free speech and a free press, leaving almost unlimited and autocratic power in the president's hands.
print portions of it to show how dangerous is the
movement In Washington now to abridge our;
rights and to subvert the republican form of government into a one-man system. Says the senator; I take no stock in all this talk about 'liberty" and the "driving of autocracy from the face of the earth" while at the same time and in the same breath we are sowing the seed of an intolerable despotism upon the free soil of America, which will grow up to vex us in the years to come. It is very .natural for men in authority to desire power it is the natural impulse of the heart of every potentate that his will is the best law for the government of,' all. There is no draft that makes such a dangerous drunk as power. Some wise man has observed that "power will intoxi
cate the best hearts as vine the strongest heads. ! No man is wise enough nor good enough to be J trusted with unlimited power, for whatever qual-, ification he may have evinced to entitle him to "
the possession of so dangerous a privilege, yet, when possessed, others can no longer answer for him, because he can.no longer answer for himself." How profoundly true. He knows in his own conceit what he wants to do and therefore thinks that everybody who differs from him must necessarily be wrong.

I am not questioning the wisdom of any particular individual; I am just discussing the nature of mankind generally, ; but I repeat the source of all power in the United States, determined by the' very system and form of our Government is vested with the citizen. That truth can not be tod often repeated. !
It is also a truth, let me repeat, proven by history and the experience of mankind, that even under the best forms of government those intrusted with absolute power have invariably converted it into a tyranny. It is well, therefore, to avoid everything that has in it the elements of ultimate despotism. The American people can be trusted to do that which is best for their Government. The irresistible influence of self-interest assures that. I would rather trust the feelinire and the wisdom of all the people than the
judgment of any one man or small coterie of men.

The safest and best laws are enlightened public opinion crystallized. If you will tell me what the; man who toils wants, if you will .describe his necessities, if I might b4 permitted .to put my ear to his bosom and hear the throbs of his patriotic, honest heart, read his unexpressed thoughts, and know the impulses of his anxious soul, I can write the perfect law. . . I can extract more wisdom and justice from the feeling of the masses, made known by the liberty of speech and freedom of the press than by the reasdnihg or logical processes of the wise few.
Senator Vardaman in a speech against the censorship clause of the espionage bill re-iterated the principles of American government. We re-
' Too long residence in Washington, surrounded by flatterers and courtiers, the man in high office Is liable to lose the common touch and forget that the real people, for whose service the Government is at least in part established. Our only means of ascertaining what the people really want, feel, and need is through the columns of the newspapers and magazines, and to cut off that source of information would be disastrous.
