Auto Trade Collapse Will Follow When U. S. Seizes Steel TOLEDO, O., May 12. Nat C. Wright, publisher of the Detroit Journal and the Toledo Blade, today issued the following statement concerning the contemplated 5 per cent,, war tax on the automobile industry and the threatened commandeering of the steel supply: "The consensus In Detroit and Toledo seems to be that the passage of the 5 per cent war tax and the commandeering of the steel supply spells ruin to the automobile Industry. Manufacturers, interviewed this morning, are unanimous in saying that many plants will be forced to close by the tax all of them by the governmental taking over of steel Factories In Hard Straits "Factories cannot be adjusted to the manufacture of trucks or tractors, even if favored by the government with steel, in less than nine to fourteen months. Some of the biggest plants in business have steel for only a few weeks. "The feeling here is that the steel companies are able to care for all governmental and industrial needs unless compelled to make discriminatory distribution. No one objects to a reasonable tax or a reasonable diversion of steel to governmental purposes. "Some assurances that the government will not pursue a radical course are imperative to prevent an imminent collapse." Urges Pressure on Congress "Congress seems determined to make a sacrifice of the motor car industry unless opposed by the influence from members of Its own district. "If you agree that the fifth greatest industry in the country should not be put out of business, will you treat the matter editorially and exert, your influence on your representatives? Advices from Washington indicate positively that no other influence can avert the danger indicated."

SQUEAKS From the editor's swivel chair As long as their patriotism does not interfere with their present efficient process of separating the ultimate consumer from his dollars, some dealers rank pretty high as patriots. They admitted it last night when the city attempted to reduce the cost of produce. - A headline "Over ry about a sale of cattle says : Wayne Stanley Smiles. And wouldn't you smile too under thjase circumstances? Russia, the newest republic, is already leading the way. Thieves held a meeting and asked for a part in the government. Over here we have to vait until they have been in office awhile before we are able to draw our own conclusions. While Ealfour and his party have been tending to business in Washington, Joffre and hi3 mission have been disporting themselves in the limelight And still the war goes on. Among other relief funds, we are considering opening one for the author of Squeaks. Why not everybody else is getUng relieved. We're getting relieved of our money fa3t enough but we don't want that kind of relief. We think our readers would be glad to subscribe an annuity thereby ai'cwing us to retire and never again inflict a single little Squeak on 'em. Think it over. It's a noble cause. A Kansas farmer bought a cow In 1895 for $15, got milk and butter all these years, and now killed her for beef and, got $15.57 for the hide. ave $JS R I A $ T Shoes $J $JP U Method Colonial Bldg. "Submarine destruction has been steadily increasing' for six weeks. The situation is one of extreme gravity, make sure of that." This was the warning of Herbert C. Hoover, who Is to be America's food dictator, on his arrival in the United States from France. Declaring that deaths in the industrial districts of Belgium had been "multiplied by three" on account of submarine operations during March and April. Mr. Hoover said the U-boats were the one big menace which must be eliminated in order to win the war. "The European food situation as well as the general war situation there requires every possible effort we can make," he said.' "What Europe needs most is wheat and it must have wheat, but it must also have beef and pork products. As for Belgium, the relief system is struggling to Its feet after having been practically knocked out by-the submarines. Five of our ships have been torpedoed since March 1. , we have landed only 60.000 tons of food in Belgium daring March and April. Deaths greatly increased. The babies were cared for first. They did not die. It was the adults, the old people-the mothers, who suffered. The relief commission has only thirty vessels. It should have seventy to feed Belgium alone'
