ITALY'S COMMISSION ARRIVES 111 AMERICA' TO INSURE ACCORD

NEW YORK. May 11. Enrico ArIotta, bead of the Italian commission which has Just arrived in this country received newspaper men today and discussed with them the purpose of bis mission and the war situation generally. "We desire to procure an absolute accord with the United States as we have already with France and England. We do not need men at the front because we have accomplished the greatest work " any nation could occomplish in providing men for the war," he said. "We of course, shall be glad to arrange a war loan in America with' which to pay for what we have purchased here without disturbing exchange rates."

Lawrence C. Brower, a reservist in the U. S. A. who was recently furloughed to allow him to serve in the police department af Calexico, Calif., has been ordered to report to the colors. Mr. Brower is known in Richmond, being a former resident.

about 13 miles northeast of Monastir, the Bulgarians say that a vigorous attack was opened after a heavy bombardment but collapsed with heavy losses. .,. It was followed by another attack which, the report says, was completely shattered. ,

WASHINGTON, May 11. Secretary Daniels has awarded a medal of honor to first Lieut. Ernest C. Williams, marine corps, of Illinois, for extraordinary heroism in the capture of a fort at San Francisco De Macoris, Dominican Republic, Nov. 29, 1916. In the face of fire from forty enemy rifles Williams led -12 marines in a dash against the fort, reached the doors just as they were being closed, pushed inside and captured the fort. Eight of his men were wounded but

none killed.

LONDON, May 11. A number of wounded Canadians and Americans who participated in the battles of the past fortnight on the western front have been brought back to British hospitals for treatment. Although the use of names is still forbidden, the American correspondents have been allowed to visit eome of these men who are in hospitals near London. . The number of wounded arriving in England has thus far been very much smaller than has always been anticipated when opertioqs of this magnitude were considered, and therefore, the task of dealing with them has been much easier than was expected.
